Deep Space Nine Confirmed To Exist In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s 32nd Century

Be warned, this contains spoilers for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1, Episode 5, “Series Acclimation Mil.” The show confirmed that Deep Space Nine exists in the 32nd century, two years prior to the events of the current series. Written by Kirsten Beyer and Tawny Newsome, and directed by Larry Teng, the fifth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy reintroduced Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and paid tribute to Avery Brooks’s portrayal of Captain Benjamin Sisko.

Kerrice Brooks plays Mil Series Acclimation Mil, or SAM, who takes on the important role of representing her people, the Kasqians. She’s motivated by the example of Captain Sisko and his position as the Emissary of the Prophets on Bajor. SAM receives guidance from Professor Illa Dax (Tawny Newsome), who carries the memories of previous Dax hosts – including Lt. Commander Jadzia Dax (Terry Farrell) and Lt. Ezri Dax (Nicole de Boer) – and their experiences with Captain Sisko.

In the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 5, Jake Sisko (played by Cirroc Lofton) appeared and spoke as if he were his father, offering a tribute to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This episode helped introduce the story of Deep Space Nine to both longtime and new Star Trek viewers. Interestingly, the Deep Space Nine space station still exists in the future setting of the late 32nd century within Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Star Trek: Discovery Confirmed Deep Space Nine Still Exists In Starfleet Academy’s 32nd Century

As a huge Star Trek fan, I was so excited to see confirmation that Deep Space Nine exists in the 32nd century during the latest episode of Star Trek: Discovery! In season 5’s “Lagrange Point,” they actually showed a star chart with both DS9 and Bajor clearly labeled. It’s down in the bottom left corner, just below Trill, on the map of our Alpha Quadrant. It was a fantastic little nod to the classic series and really made my day!

As a longtime Trek fan, I’m really excited about Star Trek: Starfleet Academy! It starts in 3195, so about four years after the end of Star Trek: Discovery. It’s cool to think that Deep Space Nine is still around – it seems like it would have survived those years between the two shows set in the 32nd century.

We don’t know if the space station DS9 still appears as it did in the show Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The United Federation of Planets might have updated or completely rebuilt it from its beginnings as a Cardassian mining station.

The fact that Deep Space Nine is still operational after 800 years isn’t so strange when you consider the Golden Gate Bridge still exists in 32nd-century San Francisco, near Starfleet Academy.

Star Trek: Discovery’s DS9 Homages Helped Set Up Starfleet Academy

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is a continuation of the story started in Star Trek: Discovery. Discovery introduced ideas and characters that not only set up Starfleet Academy, but also influenced elements seen in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, all taking place in the 32nd century.

In later seasons, Star Trek: Discovery introduced several new alien species and characters. Season 3 featured Ferengi and Lurians from the 32nd century, and season 4 included a Changeling. Notably, Federation President Laira Rillak, played by Chelah Horsdal, was revealed to be a unique hybrid of Bajoran, Cardassian, and human ancestry.

The primary antagonists in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 were the Breen, a race of aliens known for their distinctive refrigerated suits, and who previously played a significant role in the Dominion War storyline of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This season also revealed what the Breen look like under their helmets, thanks to the character L’ak, played by Elias Toufexis.

The fifth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was a heartfelt tribute to Captain Benjamin Sisko, and it left the possibility open for future stories set in the world of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This means cadets from Starfleet Academy and the War College could potentially visit the Deep Space Nine station in future episodes.
