Debra Messing’s gay fans turn on Will & Grace star after she branded Zohran Mamdani a ‘jihadist’ in shock attack

Debra Messing is still receiving criticism for her social media posts about Zohran Mamdani, one of which seemed to compare him to a ‘jihadist’.

The actress, once very popular and considered a hero by many in the LGBTQ+ community because of her work on Will & Grace, is now facing backlash from fans due to recent social media posts.

This week, Katya, a star from RuPaul’s Drag Race, publicly criticized the 57-year-old celebrity in a strong statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

‘God Debra Messing is such a stupid b***h,’ the performer posted to his million followers.

Other fans didn’t hold back in the comments, with one writing, ‘Will & Disgrace!’

Another wrote, ‘She ruined Will & Grace for me. I’m p****d.’

Someone else said the actress completely ruined their favorite show, making it impossible for them to enjoy ‘Will & Grace’ anymore due to her racist behavior.

The Daily Mail reached out to Adam Messing for a statement but hasn’t received one. He also hasn’t publicly addressed the recent criticism.

While the actress faced criticism and calls for cancellation in the United States, she was simultaneously receiving recognition at the International LGBTQ+ Film Festival in Tel Aviv.

Messing celebrated her win with a post on Instagram expressing her deep connection to the LGBTQ+ community, which she considers family. She reflected on three decades of working to support them, acknowledging both successes and setbacks, but emphasizing continuous progress.

She shared that being acknowledged by the TLVFest, especially during its 20th year and in her home country, was an incredibly moving experience.

As someone who closely follows the situation in the Middle East, I’m so relieved to know that Israel stands out as a truly safe haven for LGBTQ+ people. It’s incredibly important to me that it’s the only country in the region where we can live openly, be ourselves, and have our rights legally protected. It offers a sense of hope and security that’s often missing elsewhere.

The actress caused a public uproar this week when she posted a comment that many interpreted as calling New York City’s new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, a jihadist.

I follow Mark Messing, and on November 4th – the day of the New York City mayoral election – he shared a political meme on Instagram. It came from an account called Persian Jewess, and I saw it on his page that day.

The photo showed someone marking a sample ballot that offered only two choices, one of which simply stated ‘A Democrat.’

The second possibility described someone who was both a communist and a religious extremist – a person who genuinely followed the teachings of Karl Marx and actively hated America.

The actress’s post caused a huge uproar online, with many people attacking her and calling her names like ‘racist’ and ‘idiot’.

Messing, who identifies as Jewish and a supporter of Israel, also posted numerous offensive comments about Mamdani on Instagram, including sharing posts originally made by former President Trump.

Before the Hamas attacks on October 7th, Messing was well-known for being a vocal liberal and for actively opposing Donald Trump.

She was a strong supporter of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, and in 2017, GLAAD (the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) recognized her with a Media Excellence Award.

Recently, though, she’s become a much stronger supporter of Israel, and is now willing to back it unconditionally.

A disturbing social media post falsely claimed that Mamdani, because of his Muslim faith, was secretly plotting to convert New Yorkers to Islam en masse.

In a separate post, someone called Mamdani ‘Osama Bin Mamdani,’ drawing a comparison between him and the al-Qaeda terrorist Osama Bin Laden.

Debra Messing’s recent social media posts have sparked outrage among progressive users. One commenter expressed strong disapproval, stating they hope Messing is never employed again due to what they perceived as racist remarks – specifically, labeling someone as a ‘jihadist’ on election day.

Someone else commented that the series of posts on her Instagram story felt like more than just a difficult time – they said ‘meltdown’ didn’t even begin to describe it.

Besides facing criticism on social media, Messing has also received backlash from some of her friends in Hollywood due to her strong support for Israel during the current war in Gaza.

In July, Marcia Cross publicly criticized Deb Messing in a now-deleted comment, stating that Messing was wrong about a serious issue – which Cross described as a genocide – despite believing Messing’s intentions were good. Cross urged Messing to share accurate information and guide others with the truth.

Alyssa Milano has also called Messing out on Instagram.

However, others came to the defence of the Emmy award-winning sitcom star.

‘Glad to see she finally came to her senses,’ one supporter wrote.

Someone else commented positively about Debra Messing, saying at least she’s using common sense. They then criticized the original commenter, suggesting they were easily influenced and lacked education.

A third agreed, accusing Mamdani of being a ‘communist piece of s**t.’

Shortly after Messing’s divisive online posts, Mamdani won the election, defeating both former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican candidate Curtis Silwa.

Messing, known for her strong political views and vocal opposition to antisemitism, previously shared that she cast her early vote for Cuomo on October 25th.

She voted for Andrew Cuomo, believing his experience is what the city needs to recover and become safe again. She wants to see New York thrive as a global financial hub, with more affordable housing and increased police presence to ensure safety on streets and in the subway system.

‘A social worker cannot help someone who is stabbed in the subway.’

She believed New York City is too big and complex for someone Mamdani’s age, 34, and that he doesn’t have enough real-world experience to effectively lead as mayor.

She urged her followers to vote and use their voices to make a difference.

Mamdani has shrugged off criticism about his age and inexperience throughout his entire campaign.

Following his decisive win on Tuesday, he outlined his initial priorities, such as affordable childcare for all, quicker and complimentary bus service, and a plan to prevent rent increases for those in rent-controlled apartments.

Okay, so this candidate? He gets it. He’s all about making things actually livable for people like me! He wants to raise the minimum wage to thirty bucks an hour – seriously, imagine that! – and build more affordable housing, which is desperately needed. But the best part? He wants the super-rich to finally pay their fair share through higher taxes. It’s just…everything he stands for, it’s like he’s speaking directly to me! It’s amazing.

Mamdani’s campaign and those who supported him presented the outcome as a clear sign that voters wanted policies focused on affordability and that they disapproved of the negative campaigning during the election.
