Deborah Knight makes thinly-veiled swipe at fellow journalists as she returns to Nine after leaving radio

It seems Deborah Knight made a subtle criticism, perhaps aimed at media figures who appreciate the limelight.

The experienced journalist, aged 52, revealed in this week’s Stellar magazine that she prefers to maintain a level of privacy regarding her personal life.

‘I guess some people are comfortable being in the spotlight,’ she said.

I’m not the type of person who seeks attention or desires such things. In fact, I’ve never desired them. I prefer to stay out of the limelight.” This version maintains the original meaning while being more conversational and easy to understand.

She mentioned that she generally likes to maintain privacy regarding her personal life, yet she realizes that being a prominent public figure might spark curiosity.

Last month, Deborah resumed her full-time television career at Nine, following her departure from 2GB’s Money News.

Deb took on the role of presenter for the national 9News Morning bulletin at 11:30am each weekday.

In 2020, Deb initially started working for 2GB’s afternoon show. It was said that she began with an annual salary of around $600,000. However, by late 2023, she was reassigned from her position due to low audience ratings.

At the time, the broadcaster was said to be ‘shattered’ by the decision. 

In spite of the upheaval, Deb recovered swiftly and took charge of Money News starting from November 2023, occupying a refreshed time slot between 7 pm and 8 pm.

And it didn’t take long for her to prove the doubters wrong.

In the recent rating survey, Deb significantly boosted Money News’ audience share to 13.3%, making her the top-ranked host nationwide for that timeslot. Moreover, she managed to more than double the show’s viewership in Queensland, where it airs on Brisbane’s 4BC radio station as well.

The program saw a notable boost in its ratings, increasing by 0.6 points in the most recent survey. This improvement marks the highest rating for the year so far for 2GB.

Deb made an impressive comeback on Money News following some challenging years, during which she was abruptly let go from the Today show back in 2020.

Subsequently, she assumed control of the afternoon slot on 2GB, initially performing well with a 11.4% audience share. However, her performance declined drastically, reaching an all-time low of 6% audience share in 2023, eventually leading to her replacement.

Currently, Deb characterized her recent appointment at Money News as a progression, informing her audience: “I will be relinquishing my position as host for Afternoons. However, please note that I am not departing from 2GB. Instead, I’m assuming a more encompassing network role.
