Okay, seriously, it feels like my whole world is ending! The Kyle and Jackie O show is over? I can’t even process it. Australian radio is just… it’s not going to be the same ever without them. I’ve listened every single day for years, and honestly, I don’t know what I’ll do now. It’s a total loss!
Jackie ‘O’ Henderson and Kyle Sandilands are no longer working together. Jackie’s lucrative contract, worth around $100 million, has been cancelled, and Kyle has been taken off the air following a heated argument they had on-air last month about astrology.
Since 2000, this radio duo has been known for creating controversy and consistently making headlines. Their bold and often shocking on-air style has consistently outperformed other shows and kept them at the top of the ratings.
With the announcement on Tuesday that the duo has split and their KIIS FM morning show is ending, their future is now unclear.
Jackie has been offered a new TV show and might distance herself from her co-star’s controversial behavior, which has caused their current show to be canceled multiple times.
Kyle and Jackie O’s show has faced challenges over the years due to Sandilands’ outspokenness, including losing sponsors, drawing protests, and even facing legal threats.
Lie detector furore
During a 2009 broadcast on 2Day FM’s breakfast radio show, a 14-year-old girl became upset while taking a lie detector test and revealed she had been sexually assaulted at age 12.
Kyle then replied: ‘Right… is that the only [sexual] experience you’ve had?’
Jackie immediately stopped the broadcast and stated that neither the hosts nor the producers were aware of the assault beforehand.
It was too little too late, however, and the segment became a major news story.
Even 2DayFM advertiser Optus announced it was appalled by the incident.
Following public criticism, Network Ten announced that Kyle would no longer be a judge on Australian Idol.
In a later interview with 60 Minutes, the radio personality showed no regret about the controversy that led to his show being suspended for two weeks.
When Karl Stefanovic from 60 Minutes asked Kyle if he regretted anything involving Jackie, Kyle immediately said he did not.
‘None. Well, we did nothing,’ he replied simply to the question.
Jackie expressed regret, explaining that she now understands where the line is. She added that she was much younger and less experienced with motherhood at the time.
I would never agree to something like that now. If anyone proposed a segment involving a lie detector test for a young girl, I’d immediately say no – it’s out of the question.
Kyle was invited back to Australian Idol in 2023, and remains a judge to this day.
Magda Szubanski concentration camp comments
In 2009, Sandilands was taken off the air again after making insensitive remarks about actress Magda Szubanski that referenced the Holocaust.
Sandilands suggested the actress could lose weight if she was in a concentration camp.
He described watching her health decline, saying it was as if she was wasting away, like someone being held in a concentration camp.
Sandilands explained that his comments about concentration camps were misinterpreted, and he was deeply upset by the reaction he received.
While chatting with producers Matt Simpson and Bruno Bouchet on their show, The Probe, the radio presenter jokingly criticized Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) for briefly taking him off the air in 2009 after a public complaint.
He described how, after being suspended, he had to explain himself to a small group of board members and people involved in the production. They were very critical of his actions.
I didn’t mean any harm by what I said, and I certainly wasn’t trying to hurt the Jewish community. It was frustrating when people started believing the false narrative that emerged.
You know, it really hit me recently – after years of being supported and even celebrated for my work, the moment things got tough, the support just vanished. It felt incredibly disheartening, like the very people who encouraged me were suddenly against me when I needed them most. It made me realize how quickly things can change, and how important it is to have genuine, consistent support systems in place.
‘”You dogs,” I said, “You’re just all dogs.” They all just lined up to turn on me and I just thought, wow you people you helped create this and then you just want to turn your back on someone,’ he added.
Sexist spray breaches standards
In 2011, Sandilands received criticism from advertisers after he angrily criticized journalist Alison Stephenson. This happened because she had written a bad review of his television program, ‘A Night with the Stars’.
Kyle Sandilands responded to a negative article on news.com.au, claiming the author had called the project a disaster and clearly held a longstanding dislike for him and his work.
He launched into a furious tirade, calling her names and belittling her work. He insulted her appearance and dismissed her position as deputy editor of the website as insignificant, ultimately resorting to abusive language.
Alison Stephenson, the deputy editor at news.com.au, is being accused of bias. The commenter is calling her a ‘troll’ and questioning her impartiality.
That was a deeply inappropriate and aggressive outburst. It included personal insults about her appearance and professional life, and contained a threatening statement. The speaker criticized her clothing and made a rude comment about her body, then threatened physical harm if she continued speaking.
As a lifestyle expert, I saw a lot of controversy erupt around this particular show. It got so bad that major advertisers – brands like Holden, Telstra, and Harvey Norman – actually pulled their commercials. It was a really significant reaction and showed just how much people disagreed with what happened.
Sandilands was investigated by Australia’s media regulator, ACMA, and found to have violated standards of decency.
Virgin Mary offense sparks protests, death threats and a lawsuit
As a lifestyle commentator, I remember when Kyle Sandilands faced legal trouble a couple of years after some controversial remarks he made on his KIIS FM breakfast radio show – specifically, comments about the Virgin Mary. It really sparked a lot of discussion at the time and ultimately led to a lawsuit.
On September 18, 2019, Sandilands upset many listeners when he claimed the Virgin Mary was not a virgin.
He explained on the radio that he initially believed Mary was Jesus’s girlfriend, but he later learned she was actually his mother.
Okay, let’s be real. I’ve heard some stories in my time, but this one takes the cake. A woman claimed she got pregnant by a ghost? Honestly, it’s a pretty transparent lie, and everyone knows it. It’s just…not believable, and frankly, a little insulting to people’s intelligence. I always say, honesty is the best policy, even when things are tough.
Someone ambushed her behind the camel shed. If you trust everything written 2,000 years ago completely, that’s incredibly naive. Frankly, it’s foolish.
Following controversial remarks that spread quickly online, a large group of Christian and Muslim protesters assembled outside the KIIS FM studios in North Ryde, calling for a retraction and apology for what they considered an offensive joke.
Okay, so Kyle Sandilands actually apologized? I couldn’t believe it when I heard! He sounded genuinely sorry, said he really regretted the joke, and honestly, it was a relief to hear him say it. I’ve been a fan for years, and even though the joke was awful, I’m glad he owned up to it.
‘I didn’t realise the gravity of it. I upset a lot of people,’ he said.
‘Even friends of mine were like, “Bro, how could you say something so dumb like that?”‘
Sandilands explained he simply intended to be funny and stressed that the joke wasn’t premeditated.
He admitted the most upsetting part of everything was the death threats made against his loved ones because of his statements.
But he made it clear to naysayers he wouldn’t be quitting his job over it.
I’m not resigning, and I won’t be fired. But I am truly sorry, because I never meant to offend anyone, as I’ve already stated.
I realize I’ve caused some hurt, and I sincerely apologize. I’ve done what I can, and I know everyone makes mistakes – this is simply one of mine.
In 2021, Khalil Farah, a Maronite Catholic living in Canberra, filed a lawsuit seeking compensation for religious discrimination he experienced.
Farah claimed Sandilands made several insulting and offensive remarks about biblical miracles, questioned the trustworthiness of the Virgin Mary, and implied Christians were unintelligent or easily fooled.
Sandilands quietly settled the court case.
Mushroom murder quip ends in risk of jail time
In 2025, Sandilands and Henderson could have been sent to jail after being accused of contempt of court for things they said while covering the trial of Erin Patterson, who was accused of a triple murder.
After Kyle Sandilands made comments on air about a legal case – including a particularly harsh statement calling for the person involved to be imprisoned – the hosts of the KIIS FM breakfast show were reported to the Victorian Office of Public Prosecutions on June 16th.
Justice Beale, a Supreme Court judge, urged commentators to think carefully before speaking publicly, cautioning that careless statements could lead to trouble.
However, the chief prosecutor for Victoria stated that the radio hosts would not face legal penalties for potentially interfering with the court case.
The statement confirmed that none of the incidents raised a significant risk of unfairly influencing Ms. Patterson’s trial.
The evidence wasn’t strong enough to prove contempt beyond a reasonable doubt, and a conviction for these incidents is unlikely.
Okay, so it’s been a bit of a day for the Kyle and Jackie O show! It turns out they might face some trouble with the broadcasting regulators. Apparently, they’ve had a few separate issues with their guidelines, and one of them was… well, let’s just say it involved an inappropriate audio clip of staff members. It’s a reminder that even popular shows need to stay on the right side of the rules!
In July, Patterson was convicted of murdering her former in-laws, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail’s sister, Heather Wilkinson, 66.
Put on a leash
The Kyle and Jackie O Show is famous for its often outrageous and explicit jokes, but the hosts said last year they would try to be a little less wild.
Sandilands and Henderson haven’t gained much traction with listeners in Melbourne since they started broadcasting there in April 2024, and their radio ratings have dropped.
To attract more listeners in Sydney, the popular KIIS FM show said they would be on their best behavior and stop with the playful jokes.
The show’s new advertising slogan is ‘Listen now. We’re behaving,’ likely intended to attract more viewers in Melbourne.
Kyle and Jackie are known for their candid interviews, including discussions about intimacy, and have even shared tips on recognizing massage parlors that offer more than just relaxation on their radio show.
Since the show launched in Melbourne last year, KIIS FM has been making changes to better suit local listeners.
In November, Kyle announced he would tone down the explicit content in his work to attract a wider audience in Melbourne.
According to ARN’s head of content, Duncan Campbell, the show’s sexual content wasn’t a major focus. He told Mumbrella it was a relatively minor element.
‘Because it was graphic, it grabbed everyone’s attention – but [Kyle’s] taken that off, really.
‘It’s still sexual content. But not the graphic sexual content that it once was.’
Campbell shared that Kyle was the driving force behind reducing the show’s more intense elements and is really focused on making it a success with audiences in Melbourne.
Kyle had previously criticized the show’s low viewership in Melbourne, claiming residents were overly sensitive and easily offended. He made these comments in a heated outburst.
He angrily blamed everyone, saying their tardiness and enjoyment of past drama were the reasons for the current situation. He accused them of reveling in the chaos that had previously existed.
They had a brief period of success, reaching the top spot for a month, but now their popularity is declining. People are still talking about it endlessly, though.
‘If you want to listen to s**t, listen to s**t, that is fine by me.’
Listeners may now be tuning out for good.
As a long-time listener, I was really shocked to hear the news about Jackie Henderson leaving KIIS FM. Apparently, ARN, the company that owns the station, confirmed her contract – a huge $100 million deal – is over. From what I understand, she told the bosses she just couldn’t work with Kyle Sandilands anymore after his on-air comments really upset her and left her in tears. It’s so sad to see things end this way.
Sandilands has been suspended and given 14 days to ‘remedy’ the breach, or else faces termination.
Okay, so here’s the deal: ARN has officially let Kyle Sandilands know they weren’t happy with his behavior on air on February 20th. They’ve put it in writing, stating it was a serious breach of their agreement with Quasar Media – basically, a really big mistake in terms of their contract. It’s a formal notification about a serious issue they’ve identified.
Oh my god, they’re canceling the KIIS breakfast show! I just heard they’re taking it off the air right now! They’re saying they’re just putting something temporary in place, but honestly, it doesn’t feel temporary at all. I’m devastated! What am I going to listen to on my drive to work?! It’s like they’re ripping my mornings apart!
ARN has offered Henderson the possibility of an alternative show on the network.
