Death Stranding 2: Release date and what to expect
Prepare for Sam Bridges’ latest adventure.
The long-awaited sequel to Death Stranding is now set for release, and it’s arriving earlier than many anticipated. In contrast to its predecessor, this new installment has made a more subtle journey from unveiling to market launch, with Kojima Productions opting for a more reserved approach when sharing updates about the game.
After Hideo Kojima unveiled an emotionally impactful, ten-minute trailer revealing the release date for Death Stranding 2 at a unique SXSW event, much of the initial skepticism has been alleviated.
If you’ve overlooked the trailer for Death Stranding 2 or are simply eager to learn more, you’ve come to the perfect spot! Here’s a comprehensive rundown of Death Stranding 2 ahead of its much-anticipated release later in the year.
When is the Death Stranding 2 release date?
Death Stranding 2 launches on June 26, 2025, exclusively for PlayStation 5.
If you’re interested in our predictions about when the PC version might be released, as well as general opinions on the game’s temporary exclusivity, we have a separate guide for that. Feel free to take a look!
As a gamer, I’m excited to share that I can jumpstart my gaming adventure two whole days earlier than everyone else! That’s right, if I grab the Digital Deluxe Edition on June 24, 2025, I’ll get early access to the game, starting my journey on the 22nd instead of the 24th. This special edition not only gets me ahead but also comes packed with some extra goodies!
What to expect from Death Stranding 2? Mexico, Cultists, and Kaiju battles
Similar to its forerunner, Death Stranding 2 is an expansive action game set in awe-inspiring landscapes, where you often find yourself battling bandit cargo thieves or evading eerie BT entities, all while ensuring timely deliveries.
In essence, Death Stranding 2 delves deeper into its central themes. Fundamentally, the original Death Stranding aimed to depict the struggle against isolation and the importance of connection. It served as a heartfelt critique of modern human society.
In a new twist, Death Stranding 2 appears to delve into related themes albeit from a fresh perspective. The game’s tagline, “We should not have connected,” hints at an examination of the darker, less compassionate aspects that may arise when societies unite, a concept that seems plausible in a post-pandemic setting.
In this new adventure, you’ll continue to play as Sam Bridges, but this time he’s delivering goods and expanding outposts not under the government, but under a private organization called Drawbridge, who govern Mexico instead of UCA.
Alongside Sam on his journeys is a sprightly pocket-sized figure named Dollman, making the trip from point A to point B seem more vibrant and full of life this time.
Regarding the characters, the game includes many well-known figures such as Fragile and Higgs. Moreover, there are several fresh faces on the scene, with one particularly noteworthy addition: Neil, portrayed by the talented Italian actor, Luca Marinelli.
Neil strongly resembles the main character, Solid Snake, from various Metal Gear series, leading some to think that Kojima is symbolically paying tribute to his previous works by this likeness.
Instead of just Icelandic landscapes being beautifully yet repetitively presented in the first game, this new one offers a wider variety of settings, including treacherous deserts, vibrant rainforests, and snowy mountain ranges.
In Death Stranding 2, not just the surroundings are subject to change; the latest trailer hints at a complex weather mechanism, novel exploration and fight techniques, intense firefights, motorcycle chases, and colossal BT confrontations reminiscent of Kaiji.
All in all, the upcoming game seems to be taking a more serious, or subdued, direction compared to its previous version. It appears to be aiming for grandeur and ambition in every facet.
