The movie Death of a Unicorn, starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, is proving to be a hit on streaming services. According to Flix Patrol, it’s currently the third most-watched movie on HBO Max. The film has also reached the top 10 in 20 countries and is currently number one in 11, including Mexico, Chile, and the Bahamas.
Alex Scharfman directs and wrote this film, following him and his teenage daughter, Ridley (played by Jenna Ortega), on a weekend trip to his boss’s large estate, owned by Odell Leopold (Richard E. Grant). Their drive takes a dark turn when they accidentally hit a young unicorn, unleashing a wave of fantastical horror on the estate’s wealthy inhabitants.
The movie’s cast includes Naomi Rudd and Edgar Ortega, alongside Belinda, played by Odell’s wife; Will Poulter as their son, Shepard; Anthony Carrigan as the butler, Griff; and Jessica Hynes as the family assistant, Shaw. Sunita Mani and Stephen Park also appear as Doctors Bhatia and Song, scientists who work for Odell.
When Death of a Unicorn came out in theaters in March 2025, it received mixed reviews from critics and a fairly positive, but not enthusiastic, response from moviegoers. During its time in cinemas, the film only earned $16.4 million, barely making back its $15 million production cost.
Currently, the movie Death of a Unicorn has a 52% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 220 reviews from critics. Viewers seem to like it more, giving it a 76% score on the site, based on more than 1,000 ratings.
