Death is Often Followed by Dating

In simpler terms, the Reverend Richard Coles admitted that death sometimes leads to dating when giving comforting guidance to a widow and her child.

During a unique installment on the Apple & Tree podcast, supported by Marie Curie, 62-year-old Richard openly discussed coping strategies for dealing with grief, having recently lost his spouse, David.

David sadly passed away after battle with alcoholism in 2019 aged just 42.

Currently, Richard is in a relationship with the 60-year-old actor, Dickie, who is the son of Brian Cant, renowned for hosting children’s television programs like Play School and Dappledown Farm during the 1960s and 1970s.

In my personal journey, I found the prospect of dating again, three long years after losing David, to be an incredibly challenging crossroads. It wasn’t until the winds of time softened the pain that I began to contemplate such a step once more.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d like to share some insights about coping with loss: Over time, it becomes acceptable – and necessary – to find a new path forward after the departure of cherished companions.

The young man mentioned: “A few days prior to Christmas, I had a blind date. You see, my father passed away in November, and it was on the 23rd of December that I attended this blind date.

Nothing encourages stepping into the world of dating quite like discussing the loss of one’s father. Let me ponder this thought…” This version aims to maintain the original meaning while making it more natural and easy to read, using simpler language and a more conventional structure.

Richard said, “Dating usually comes after death, and it’s alright,” as he tried to comfort the guest.

Richard and Dickie met on the dating site Elite Singles and the pair hit it off straight away.

He’s hinted that marriage might be in his future, as he told The Times he could picture things going in that direction.

The actor, from Kent, has starred in Mary Queen of Scots, Stan & Ollie and Doctor Who.

Last year on I’m A Celebrity, Richard candidly shared his feelings of loss with Oti Mabuse, expressing: “I long for him to return. I wish he could just step through our door.

In my sleep, it seemed as though he entered the room, clutching an ordinary grocery bag from the local market. It reminded me of a typical shopping trip, and I exclaimed, “I’d assumed you were deceased,” to which he casually replied, “No, I was simply out doing some shopping.

Richard mentioned, “I greeted him with ‘Nice to see you again, thanks for returning,’ to which he responded, ‘Actually, I’m not sticking around, I found someone else.’ This comment caused us both to chuckle.

However, he leaves a colossal void in my life, which I navigate daily due to the pain of his absence. Meeting Dickie is wonderful news, though.

‘So we’re in a relationship now together but I just miss David very much.’

Richard and David met back in 2007 and entered a civil partnership three years later in 2010.

During his time on I’m A Celebrity, he shared that David initially got acquainted with him by attending one of his sermons in church and subsequently reaching out to him afterwards.

He mentioned that it wasn’t until he received a particular message from him that he recognized his feelings for him were romantic in nature.

Richard said: ‘I came to preach a sermon in his church and he sort of picked me up afterwards!’

Expanding on the topic, he mentioned concerning David: “I noticed that after hearing my sermon, he expressed interest in becoming ordained and asked if we could discuss it further. Subsequently, he visited us for a Sunday meal, and our conversation was formal and business-like.

Next, he elaborated on their lengthy conversation, but Richard needed to hurriedly leave for a service at the church. In this case, David inquired if it would be possible for another discussion with Richard at a later time.

After Richard had settled on finding a solution within a month or around six weeks, he attended church when his phone buzzed, receiving a text message from David that read: “Aren’t you catching on?

Richard then joked that that was when the penny dropped.

The star previously said David was ‘probably’ already an alcoholic, but neither of them was aware.

In conversation with BBC Radio Northampton, I mentioned that David had a longstanding, passionate affection for alcohol.

Or alternatively, speaking on BBC Radio Northampton, I shared that David had a persistent, heartfelt liking for alcohol.

He noted: ‘A youthful exuberance towards alcohol at ages like 20 or 25 can be understood, but when you reach 35 or 40, it’s a different story. His drinking habits, unfortunately, spiraled out of moderation.’
