Death in Paradise’s Don Gilet was “terrified” to replace Ralf Little
As a seasoned gamer of life’s grandest stage, I’ve seen my fair share of challenges, from the mean streets of Walford to the hallowed halls of Holby City. But stepping into the sun-kissed shoes of Don Gilet on Death in Paradise? That’s a whole new level of daunting.
Actor Don Gilet, known for his role in “Death in Paradise,” confessed that he felt “petrified” considering the possibility of stepping into Ralf Little‘s shoes as the main character.
In March, it was revealed that after playing DI Neville Parker for four years on the BBC crime series, Little would be leaving the show. In May, it was officially announced that Gilet had secured the role of DI Mervin Wilson and would be taking over from Little.
Actor Gilet, known for his roles in “EastEnders” and “Holby City,” will first appear on this program during the upcoming Christmas episode. The star confessed that he found it challenging to step into someone else’s footsteps.
He expressed that it probably won’t come as a shock to mention that it was equally thrilling and petrifying,” he said. “I compare it to those adrenaline-pumping rides at an amusement park. I know it will be frightening, but I plan to ride it anyway.
He admitted to putting himself in a challenging situation, feeling anxious afterwards with thoughts like, ‘What on earth have I just committed myself to?!’ Yet, it was thrilling because he recognized that he was about to embark on a fresh adventure,” he went on, sharing his personal account of previous encounters with the show.
Initially, I tuned in to observe the unique format of the program. However, what truly captivated me was their skillful blend of the heavy, suspenseful nature of a crime drama – considering it involves murder – with an amusing slant derived from the characters’ peculiarities, creating a humorous undertone.
Indeed, the climate of the Caribbean contrasts significantly with what Gilet is accustomed to for work, and the actor openly acknowledged facing certain challenges, notwithstanding the breathtaking scenery around him.
He remarked that the day was relentlessly hot from morning till night, and he found it challenging due to the constant heat. However, even though one becomes accustomed to it, it still requires an additional level of focus. The temperature cannot be adjusted, but the intense heat serves as a stunning setting for filming.
Occasionally, it’s important to take a moment, step back, and appreciate where you are and what you’re engaged in. This spot is truly breathtaking. I haven’t had many opportunities to explore its beauty fully, but once I get acclimated to the surroundings, it’s an exceptional job!
Beyond Paradise and Death in Paradise both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
