Death in Paradise star shares humourous insight into working with partner Siobhan Finneran

Don Gilet, known for his role in Death in Paradise, has shared his experience working with his partner, Siobhan Finneran, who stars in Benidorm and Happy Valley. She will be appearing as a guest star in the upcoming fifteenth season of Death in Paradise.

The actors first collaborated on the 2017 drama The Loch, and rumors of a romantic relationship began circulating the following year. They generally prefer to keep their personal life private.

While promoting the new season of her BBC One show on This Morning, Gilet was playfully questioned about her role and responded with some witty answers.

He seemed surprised when Alison Hammond mentioned Finneran would be in the new season, saying, “I thought they’d removed her from it.”

Alison playfully suggested that Gilet had tricked her into thinking they were going on vacation, when really it was to film for the show. Gilet jokingly confirmed this, saying he’d told Siobhan he had a surprise, and she’d assumed he was going to propose – but it turned out to be an acting job instead.

He said sincerely, “She really enjoyed it, and it was a pleasure working with her.” Then, with a playful tone, he added, “She’s improved so much. You could even say she’s gone from Happy Valley to… well, not-so-Happy Valley!”

Have you noticed how calm and natural she appears on camera since we started working together? It’s a quality you just can’t fake.

She seems much more confident lately, and it’s paying off – she’s been getting more job opportunities.

Gilet also joked that co-star Don Warrington was a “pain” to work with.

Alison pointed out that Gilet is naturally funny and wondered why he isn’t cast in more comedic roles. He explained that he’s consistently offered villainous or disturbed characters instead, saying, ‘They don’t give it to me; they want me to play villains and psychos.’

He enjoys both comedic and dramatic acting, as long as the character he’s playing is interesting and has depth. He’d love to be in a blockbuster like a James Bond or Star Wars movie, and is open to either franchise.

Death in Paradise returns to BBC One and iPlayer for its new season on Friday (30 January).
