In a recent interview, the new main detective on “Death in Paradise,” Don Gilet, discussed the potential departure of Commissioner Selwyn, as hinted by the premiere of Season 14.
When asked about the progression of Selwyn’s storyline this season since the Commissioner position is being eliminated, Gilet (DI Mervin Wilson’s actor) replied to Digital Spy: “I’m afraid I can’t reveal much about Selwyn as that’s his secret.
Considering his position there, both from the perspective of the audience and his character, it raises a deep question: What impact would it have if he were no longer present to exert his influence?

Gilet went on to emphasize the significance of Warrington’s part, stating, “It holds significant value.
In the realm of Saint Marie, my dear friend, he plays a role as pivotal as any fresh or seasoned detective. His character exudes an unmatched dynamism and an ‘all-knowing’ aura that sets him apart. I can’t help but feel a tinge of secrecy about it, for it’s not mine to reveal, yet his influence is palpable, evident by his continued presence on the show, in whatever role he may be filling.
As he contemplated the development of his own personality this season, Gilet pondered the impact that Mervin’s inner battles would have on his character in the forthcoming episodes.
Or,
Gilet considered how the upcoming episodes would portray Mervin’s character, given his internal conflicts.
Both sentences convey the same meaning as the original statement but are written in a more natural and easy-to-read style.

He mentioned that despite himself, Mervin undergoes a transformation with each episode, as he’s being molded by an internal conflict, specifically his strained relationship with his deceased mother and the enigma surrounding her demise.
At the beginning of the Christmas special, it’s clear that he has reached his limit. He decides to leave. However, he appears to have acquired all the information he desires from this situation. Yet, there seems to be a deep, compelling force drawing him back, almost making these fresh and puzzling crimes a reasonable justification for him to stay.
There’s a struggle going on for him, reminiscent of the question posed by The Clash in their song “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” Some issue has become so bothersome to him that he can no longer ignore it.

As I reflect on our adventure, I can’t help but ponder: Has Saint Marie transformed him so deeply that accepting this change as part of who he is, is now an inevitable truth embedded within his very core?
In my opinion, it gradually becomes clearer to people every week that there may be something deeper going on than just solving crimes.
Death in Paradise and its spin-off, Beyond Paradise, both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
