Death in Paradise icon and The Split star team up for “wickedly entertaining” new project

Though Ardal O’Hanlon recently spent time in the Caribbean, he’s now preparing for a change of scenery. He’ll be joining Stephen Mangan, known for his role in The Split, in a new stage comedy described as “wickedly entertaining.”

After playing Detective Inspector Jack Mooney on the BBC show Death in Paradise for three years, Ardal O’Hanlon is moving to the stage. He’ll be appearing in a new West End production of The Truth.

Okay, so this new play is by Florian Zeller – you might know him, he won an Oscar for The Father a few years back. This time around, it’s a pretty wild story. It’s about a guy who starts an affair with his best friend’s wife, and the whole time he’s trying to get everyone to believe that being honest isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. It’s definitely a messy situation!

This critically acclaimed play, first written in 2011, debuted in London in 2017. Now, it’s being revived at the Apollo Theatre, running from June 9th to September 12th.

Joining O’Hanlon and Mangan—the latter known for playing Nathan Stern in the BBC legal drama The Split—in The Truth are Miranda’s Sarah Hadland and Olivier Award winner Janie Dee.

Lindsay Posner is directing the production, and Christopher Hampton, the acclaimed playwright who co-wrote the screenplay for The Father with Zeller, will be responsible for the translation.

The film, The Truth, centers around Michel, a man having an affair with his best friend’s wife. Throughout the story, he tries to justify his actions by claiming that being honest isn’t always important.

The more the characters lie and mislead each other, the more surprised and intrigued the audience becomes, constantly wondering who’s being truthful. The show is described as both hilariously funny and intensely captivating.

Producer Simon Friend described the play, The Truth, as a cleverly constructed puzzle. He explained that it starts as a lighthearted comedy about infidelity but quickly becomes more profound, all while staying thoroughly enjoyable.

The moment Florian’s carefully built world falls apart, you understand you’re reading the work of a truly skilled writer. He’s a master of suspense, knowing precisely when to shock and surprise you.

The Truth plays at London’s Apollo Theatre from 9 June to 12 September.
