Death in Paradise boss’s eccentric crime show makes a disappointing return for season 2
The Marlow Murder Club, often likened to “Death in Paradise” and helmed by a boss who also served as an executive producer for the BBC series, is returning for another season. Rest assured, it remains as engaging and comforting as before, but there’s one significant change…
The Marlow Murder Club, similar to “Death in Paradise”, has a boss who also produced the BBC show, and it’s back for its second season. We’re happy to share that it continues to be just as enjoyable and snuggly as before, except for one key difference…
In the second episode of the detective series, we have the trio – Suzie (Samantha Bond), Judith (Jo Martin), and Becks (Cara Horgan) – making a comeback. Once again, they take up their unofficial roles as guardians of the town Marlow, using their amateur detective skills to ensure its safety.
In this latest turn of events, Marlow’s civilian consultants for the police find themselves embroiled in a fresh batch of baffling murder enigmas that just keep coming. As they delve into the dark underbelly of their town, it’s hard not to be amused by their brash audacity as they charge headlong into investigations they shouldn’t even be involved with. Indeed, it’s a delightfully thrilling spectacle.
The interaction among these women is equally delightful. Judith’s quirky character harmonizes beautifully with Suzie’s lively and playful humor, while the two are charismatic in their own ways. Their charm is further accentuated by Beck’s lovable yet somewhat clumsy disposition.
Similarly, these murder mystery series often feature picturesque settings that evoke a cozy sense of familiarity. Yet, hidden beneath the serene charm lies an undercurrent of sinister intentions.
Although the second season of The Marlow Murder Club manages to check off all necessary requirements, it appears less captivating due to a lack of any significant consequences or risks involved (i.e., no real stakes).
Despite the mysteries remaining intriguing due to creator Robert Thorogood’s knack for finding logic in complex and unlikely chase scenes, the structure of these tales tends to prioritize the enigma over character development, resulting in minimal emotional engagement with the episodic characters.
In simpler terms, the main three characters carry most of the emotional weight during this season, but it doesn’t feel intense or engaging enough. Contrastingly, season one captivated viewers more profoundly as Judith’s life was threatened.
As her future remained uncertain, there was a stronger sense of engagement, which unfortunately seems lacking in this current season.
To put it simply, in The Marlow Murder Club, there’s a brief glimpse into the main characters’ depth beyond their surface-level personas. It leaves us wishing for even more of this deeper exploration.
As a gamer, I found that the game didn’t offer many expansive moments throughout the season. However, it was packed with significant instances scattered here and there, which were intriguing but often left unexplored. This was a pity because those crucial points were when the game provided its most rewarding experiences.
Without revealing too much, we’ll take a moment to highlight the season finale, as it skillfully focuses on a major character, providing a more profound understanding. This definitely hits the mark.
Despite finishing all the episodes, I’m left yearning for a deeper understanding of these characters. Regrettably, Season 2 of “The Marlow Murder Club” fails to delve sufficiently into their complexities.
The second season of “The Marlow Murder Club” premieres on Wednesday, March 19th at 8 PM on both U&Drama and U. New episodes will be broadcast each week, and if you haven’t seen it yet, season 1 is currently available on U.
