Death in Paradise boss reveals star turned down lead role for love
As a huge fan of Death in Paradise, I can’t help but be fascinated by the behind-the-scenes stories of how the beloved series came to be. It’s fascinating to think that David Mitchell, the brilliant comedian from Peep Show and Would I Lie To You, was originally slated to play the role of Detective Richard Poole in the first season.
The popular show “Death in Paradise” came very close to casting a well-known comedian as the cherished lead character, Detective Richard Poole, in its first season.
In a recent chat, Robert Thorogood, the mastermind behind the acclaimed BBC drama series, disclosed that another actor was originally slated for the part prior to Ben Miller ultimately getting the role.
Based on Thorogood’s account, the comedian David Mitchell, who is known for his roles in “Peep Show” and “Would I Lie To You,” initially had the offer to portray DI Richard, but he declined for a unique reason.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way: “Thorogood shared that Mitchell had to make a tough call and let go of the Caribbean filming project for the sake of his personal relationships. It wasn’t an easy decision, but he prioritized his love life over the opportunity to travel and work.”
David was initially planned to star in “Death in Paradise,” according to Thorogood in an interview with OK! magazine. However, once the production was given the go-ahead, he had already developed feelings for Victoria.
“He expressed deep apologies and mentioned, ‘Unfortunately, I’m unable to travel to the Caribbean for the next half year. I’ve recently begun a new relationship with Vicky Coren.'”
Mitchell’s decision appeared to be wise, as he ended up marrying Victoria Coren Mitchell in 2012, and they are now parents to two children.
Thorogood shared that we’ve been fortunate as Tony Jordan, one of the creators, insisted on naming the series “Death in Paradise” instead of opting for a title linked to the detective. He explained, “Jordan wanted to ensure that if a detective left, the show would still exist.”
When David expressed his inability, the situation didn’t seem disastrous. We simply went on the hunt for another individual who could portray an uptight, white, middle-class, privately educated, neurotic character superbly. Fortunately, we found Ben to take up the role, and it has turned out splendidly.
Death in Paradise and its spin-off, Beyond Paradise, both air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer.
