Dear Reader, Taylor Swift Endorsing Trump Is an AI-Generated Fairytale

As a seasoned movie critic who has seen countless political campaigns unfold like a Hollywood blockbuster, I must say that Donald Trump’s recent attempts to rally Taylor Swift‘s fans to his side are reminiscent of a desperate last-minute plot twist in a B-grade film.

Donald Trump encourages his supporters to think that popular musician Taylor Swift endorses a “red” vote, but it seems more likely this is merely a fantasy of his.

On Sunday, I enthusiastically endorsed my post on Truth Social, accompanied by a compilation of digital images – some seemingly crafted by AI – depicting the TIME Person of the Year embodying Uncle Sam and urging followers to cast their votes for Donald Trump. Among these images were numerous devoted Taylor Swift fans expressing their backing for the Republican presidential candidate.

Taylor Swift hasn’t publicly endorsed any candidate for the 2024 election yet. However, it’s worth noting that she supported the Biden-Harris ticket during the 2020 elections. Moreover, she has been vocal about her criticism towards former President Trump, accusing him of fueling white supremacy and racism, as well as his actions to undermine the U.S. Postal Service in 2020, which she viewed as a reckless move that endangered many American lives by attempting to manipulate the election results for his own benefit.

TIME contacted the Harris campaign for their response regarding a possible Swift endorsement, as the Democratic Party initiates its convention this week in Chicago, with several celebrities set to appear and entertain in favor of the Harris-Walz candidacy.

It’s confirmed that at least one person labeled as a “Swiftie for Trump” is genuine. As reported by Wisconsin Right Now, 19-year-old Jenna Piwowarczyk was indeed present at a Trump rally in Wisconsin in June, sporting the slogan on a homemade white T-shirt.

There’s no solid proof that a substantial number of Taylor Swift fans are backing the Republican candidate, as opposed to Kamala Harris. For instance, an unofficial Swifties for Trump account on platform X (established in July) has fewer than 4,000 followers, while an unofficial Swifties 4 Kamala account, also created in July, boasts over 60,000 followers on X and more than 100,000 on TikTok.

Trump’s Truth Social post contained an image from Amuse, a conservative account, showing fictional images of young women wearing “Swifties for Trump” T-shirts. The headline, labeled as satire, claimed that Swifties were switching their support to Trump following the cancellation of Taylor Swift’s concert in Vienna due to terrorism fears. The original post from X clarifies that there is no actual “Swifties For Trump” movement, but it suggests that there should be.

On a recent post on Truth Social on Sunday, Donald Trump reposted a TikTok video featuring a lady who suggested that fans of Taylor Swift (commonly referred to as Swifties) are now supporting Trump due to an alleged shared connection with a specific terrorist scheme.

I’ve had the pleasure of discussing Taylor Swift with Ramin Setoodeh, author of “Apprentice in Wonderland: How Donald Trump and Mark Burnett Took America Through the Looking Glass.” I once mentioned to him that she appears to be quite gifted, and I also found her strikingly beautiful, almost uniquely so. Regarding Taylor’s political leanings, according to the same book, I stated, “I believe she’s liberal. It’s possible she isn’t a fan of me.” However, I did express some uncertainty about this, apparently asking, “Is she genuinely liberal? Or could it be an act? Frankly, it’s surprising that a country music star can thrive being liberal.”

As a movie buff who’s always keeping an eye on the latest tech trends, I can’t help but notice the growing concerns about misinformation in politics, especially with new technology making it easier to spread falsehoods. Last week, Elon Musk and I shared an AI-edited video on platform X, showing us dancing after our live stream together. Now, Trump has followed suit by posting AI-generated images related to Swift. It’s a reminder of how technology can blur the lines between reality and fiction.
