Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy teases “bold” opening sequence

As a long-time fan of the Deadpool franchise, I have to admit that there were some valid concerns when it was announced that Deadpool would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The fear was that the edgy and irreverent tone of the previous two movies might be toned down in order to fit within the MCU’s broader narrative. But based on Shawn Levy‘s recent comments, I am feeling more optimistic about Deadpool & Wolverine.

After Deadpool joined the Disney Marvel universe, some people worried that his first appearance in the MCU might lack the sharp edges and adult humor that were prominent in the earlier films.

Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, has repeatedly assured us that the team-up of Deadpool and Wolverine wouldn’t be an issue. However, it’s natural to harbor some skepticism. Shawn Levy, the filmmaker behind the project, was well aware of this concern and recognized the significance of crafting a compelling opening for the movie.

In an interview with Digital Spy, Levy emphasized that the initial five minutes of a movie establish its mood. Given the numerous queries regarding the film’s potential tonal sanitization, he assured a definite answer: no.

I’ve seen my fair share of movies, and let me tell you, waiting for a new Deadpool installment is no easy feat. The anticipation builds up like a crescendo, with each passing day making the wait feel more unbearable. But as for how Levy pulled off the opening scene in Deadpool 3? That’s a mystery I’ll have to savour until the movie hits the theatres this week. Trust me, it’s going to be worth the wait!

The director, who was involved in producing and penning the script for the film, aimed to create title sequences that would match the iconic status of “Deadpool” and its sequel.

“Before our discussion, I was aware that the standards were very high for this project. But when Ryan and I began brainstorming, we considered an unconventional approach: starting the movie with that particular shot and having Deadpool perform those specific actions.”

I’ve always been a fan of the unapologetically rebellious Deadpool character, so when I heard they were making a new movie, I was both excited and skeptical. With my past experiences of watching superhero films that failed to capture the essence of their source material, I braced myself for another disappointment. But as I sat down in the theater, I couldn’t help but feel a glimmer of hope. And let me tell you, they did not disappoint.

In addition, the method through which Deadpool joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe remains uncertain. Likewise, the role of Cassandra Nova, portrayed by Emma Corrin, in the storyline is yet to be clarified.

Levy wasn’t ready to disclose everything, but he shared some fascinating insights for the fans to ponder.

“Cassandra’s reactions to Deadpool are unpredictable, as we see in the film. While she finds his constant chatter amusing at times, there’s also something intriguing about him that holds her interest. On the other hand, Cassandra is drawn to Wolverine in a way that’s more profound.”

As a voracious reader of comic books and a long-time fan of the X-Men universe, I can’t help but be intrigued by the complex dynamics between the characters. And when it comes to Wolverine and the connection he shares with both women in his life – Mystique and his brother Charles Xavier – I find myself utterly captivated.

Bring it on or – as Deadpool and Wolverine would say – “Let’s F**king Go”.

Deadpool & Wolverine is released in UK cinemas on July 25 and in US cinemas on July 26.
