Deadpool & Wolverine’s Emma Corrin reveals Hugh Jackman’s “really moving” advice
As a huge fan of the Deadpool comics and having grown up with Wolverine being a staple in the X-Men universe, I can hardly contain my excitement for Emma Corrin‘s portrayal of Cassandra in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine movie.
Emma Corrin has made a name for themselves with challenging parts, such as portraying Princess Diana in “The Crown,” and they’re now ready to tackle a renowned X-Men antagonist in their first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe within “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
In the highly anticipated film, Corrin takes on the character of Cassandra Nova, identified as Xavier’s twin sister in the comic book world. However, Marvel keeps the specifics of Cassandra’s involvement in “Deadpool 3” under wraps. At some point, she interacts with Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman).
In an interview with Digital Spy, director and co-writer Shawn Levy explained that Corrin’s unique qualities were the reason they were chosen to portray Cassandra Nova in the production.
“Cassandra, a legendary figure despite never appearing in any productions on stage or screen, is known for her mythic past. She is identified as Charles Xavier’s twin and holds the distinction of being an omega-level mutant, implying her powers are extraordinarily powerful. However, we sought to avoid creating a conventional villain.”
“Emma doesn’t rely on raw power like Thanos. Instead, she possesses an alluring yet unstable charisma and a knack for unpredictability. Her ability to transform, which we witnessed as Princess Di, I also observed in her portrayal of Emma in Orlando.”
Before the premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, Emma Corrin spoke with Digital Spy. They discussed their preparation for the character, the guidance they received from Hugh Jackman, and the most unforgettable moment during filming.
Have people frequently inquired about the distinctiveness of this new role for you, which marks your initial foray into villainy? Could there be any likenesses to a past project that you have taken on?
As a gamer, I find it intriguing when a character is heavily stereotyped as a “villain,” like Cassandra in the game. It can be challenging for me to connect with such a character and understand their motivations beyond the label.
In simpler terms, I discovered a connection between my thoughts and Diana, as she is widely known and often subjected to numerous assumptions. To understand her and make our connection personal for me, I needed to find a unique perspective that distinguished us from the common perception and filtered out the excessive information available.
Discovering Cassandra’s backstory deeply resonated with me. The intricacies of her relationship with her brother particularly struck a chord. I know it sounds far-fetched, but the way he supposedly killed her in the womb and then her miraculous rebirth and self-reconstruction only intensified my empathy for her. The profound sense of abandonment she experienced at his hands was palpable to me.
In this film, I explored how her actions could be interpreted as a response to certain situations or a call for assistance, attention, and identity crisis. All these elements added depth to her character, highlighting her vulnerability. As an actor, I’m intrigued by the balance between vulnerability and strength in every role I take on.
Could Cassandra’s unpredictability as a comic book villain make her an ideal choice for a Deadpool film?
I’ve been there before, feeling utterly convinced of my actions and beliefs, believing I was the hero in my own storyline. But life has a way of surprising us with unexpected twists and turns, like never knowing which way the wind is going to blow. It’s an exhilarating feeling, playing on that edge of complete unpredictability. However, looking back at my past experiences, I realize now that sometimes being so sure of myself blinded me from recognizing the other perspectives and potential consequences. It took me some hard knocks to learn that being open-minded and considering different viewpoints can lead to a more fulfilling and balanced life. So while it’s fun to embrace the unpredictability, it’s essential to strike a balance and remain grounded in reality.
You’re not just working opposite Ryan Reynolds, but you’ve also got Hugh Jackman who’s been Wolverine for nearly 25 years. Was there any particular advice he gave you about entering this world?
I was taken aback when he shared something deeply personal with me. He’s been immersed in this character for an extensive period, but the recent turn of events brought him under the limelight like never before, making it all feel very real and intense for him.
You recently engaged in a discussion about the deep-seated insecurities and anxieties that even highly accomplished individuals experience when faced with the immense responsibility of delivering a remarkable performance for an audience who holds great significance to that role.
I was quite anxious and sensed a great deal of expectation leading up to the situation. However, Marvel fans’ deep affection for these characters reassured me, making me feel more relaxed about their expectations.
Did you primarily shoot this production on-site with expansive sets constructed? Could there be a specific scene that stood out to you and made you think, “I’m actually part of a Deadpool film”?
I didn’t film in front of a green screen once during the production. The experience was utterly astonishing. It seemed as if we were in the most fantastic playground the world had to offer. And when you encounter Cassandra for the first time in the trailer, just imagine having an introduction like that – as grand as a Marvel character’s entrance – it was simply amazing.
I recall an instance where I came across a steep ramp that led down to where a group of boys were gathered. Shawn Levy, who was directing the scene, instructed me to take a step and make my way down. However, given the vertical nature of the ramp, I expressed my concern about how I would manage the descent. With a reassuring smile, Shawn explained that the ramp transforms into steps at the push of a button. I was taken aback by this revelation as it seemed like an impossible feat to me. The experience served as a reminder of the magic and wonder that can be brought to life in film production.
It was all functional and I was like, “Okay, now I’ve arrived. This is Marvel now.”
Finally, what are you hoping fans get from this movie when it’s released this week?
In this version, you can expect an abundant supply of Deadpool’s beloved traits, as Ryan Reynolds never fails to embody the character, and Deadpool himself remains unchanged. Additionally, there’s the compelling dynamic between Deadpool and Wolverine that cannot be denied.
In this movie, their experience is characterized by the development and strengthening of their friendship. This appears to be the primary theme of the film that viewers are likely to take away. I find it quite touching, and I believe many will be surprised by its emotional depth.
As a dedicated fan of the Deadpool franchise, I truly believe that this new installment has the power to resonate with those who have yet to be drawn in. Regardless of your preferred film genres or if you’ve simply not encountered these movies before, I strongly feel that the theme of friendship is something we can all relate to and understand. This film explores the depths of connection and friendships formed in unexpected circumstances.
Deadpool & Wolverine is released in UK cinemas on July 25 and in US cinemas on July 26.
