Deadpool & Wolverine review: A foul-mouthed, bloody treat for Marvel fans

As a long-time fan of the Merc with a Mouth and the Wolverine himself, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard Deadpool & Wolverine was finally hitting the big screen. Having grown up watching Hugh Jackman bring Logan to life in various X-Men movies, and Ryan Reynolds perfectly embodying Deadpool in his previous outings, I knew this team-up would be a treat.

After a wait of six years since the release of “Deadpool 2” and five years following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the long-awaited film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine is hitting theaters this week. The buzz is already building with leaked appearances and advance hype.

To clarify, let’s address the concern upfront: Deadpool remains unchanged from his previous films. He continues to be the crass, violent anti-hero filled with crude humor, immature sexual references, meta jokes, and breaking the fourth wall as he brutally eliminates victims.

Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine, but picture a grittier and more raw version of him, closer to “Logan” than the “X-Men.” This Wolverine isn’t shy about shedding blood or dropping F-bombs – think Deadpool’s reckless behavior. For fans of Fox’s Marvel universe, this installment could be their equivalent of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

Instead of “But is it any good? Mostly,” you could consider: “Although it’s not without flaws, the Deadpool & Wolverine movie is an enjoyable and thrilling experience.” or “Despite some imperfections, Deadpool & Wolverine delivers as an engaging summer blockbuster.”

As a movie buff with years of experience under my belt, I understand the importance of maintaining the element of surprise in cinema. Therefore, I’ll do my best to keep this review free from spoilers and assume that not everyone has seen every trailer or promotional material released for the film. It’s an essential aspect of enjoying a movie without preconceived notions or expectations influenced by external sources.

Deadpool & Wolverine review: A foul-mouthed, bloody treat for Marvel fans

After the chaos of Deadpool 2 six years ago, I, Wade Wilson, decided to trade in my superhero suit for a salesperson job at a car dealership with the returned Peter (Rob Delaney). I put on a brave face, pretending all is well. I’ve got my friends – my now-ex Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) included – and that seems to be enough for me.

As a devoted fan, I’d rephrase it like this: Mr. Paradox, the intriguing TVA agent portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen, enters my world, turning my mundane existence upside down with his existential puzzles. In desperation, I recall only one individual who might be able to aid me through this fresh predicament – none other than Wolverine. The challenge lies in convincing him to lend a hand.

In the film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the reasons and details behind the partnership of these two characters remain a secret despite being introduced early on. You may think there will be more developments as the story unfolds, but instead, the only unexpected elements are the encounters they have during their road trip.

If you’re looking for a more intricate and far-reaching storyline within the MCU, you may feel underwhelmed. On the other hand, given the expansive Marvel Cinetic Universe canvas, it’s enjoyable to notice that this film focuses instead on honoring the Fox Marvel universe and maintaining the modest stakes of the earlier “Deadpool” installments.

The enlarged MCU has provided Deadpool with additional foes to take down. In “Deadpool & Wolverine,” there are countless amusing jabs at the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including its efforts to popularize the multiverse and what it labels as its unsuccessful periods.

In the last two Deadpool films, not all jokes are successful, but another amusing moment is sure to follow. The longevity of these jokes is yet to be determined, especially considering some pop-culture references may feel outdated (like a Will Smith slap joke already does). However, the movie shines brighter when it pokes fun at filmmaking itself.

As a long-time fan of Marvel movies, I’ve grown accustomed to the excitement and anticipation surrounding big cameos. However, let me tell you from my personal experience, the latest Marvel film has managed to keep some surprises under wraps, despite the studio’s reputation for spoilers.

At the present moment, however, this is insignificant. Just as in the movie “No Way Home,” where Spidey teamed up with three Spideys, it will bring delight to Marvel enthusiasts. From lesser-known references to major stars, every cameo will elicit applause at crowded theaters. It’s remarkable how they managed to keep some of them hidden from the public.

It’s quite unexpected that the film is equally focused on Wolverine as it is on Deadpool. Hugh Jackman, who has portrayed Wolverine numerous times before, brings depth and intrigue to the character once again. His chemistry with Ryan Reynolds, perfectly embodying Deadpool, is undeniable and adds to the movie’s appeal.

In this scene, the two characters adopt an uncompromising stance, resulting in intense and violent confrontations – not just with each other, but also against numerous adversaries. One battle becomes excessively reliant on computer-generated imagery, yet most others are skillfully filmed and coordinated. A remarkable moment, both for the film and the summer season, is presented as if viewed from a side-scrolling video game, showcasing its gory details in full.

As a gamer, I can tell you that Cassandra Nova’s abilities add an unsettling element to the Deadpool storyline, making it even more thrilling and intense. Emma Corrin may not have as many opportunities to act in the role, but she certainly nails the charisma and menace required for the character. Despite having limited screen time, Cassandra leaves a lasting impression on viewers.

As a gamer, I’d describe my experience with the Deadpool & Wolverine team-up, compared to some recent MCU collaborations, as an action-packed adventure that doesn’t overstay its welcome. With a swift two-hour runtime and non-stop energy, this game moves at such a fast pace you might not even notice when we transition into the climax!

The ending leaves much to be desired, feeling typical of the MCU with its focus on a MacGuffin and confusing timeline issues. But the poignant use of “Like A Prayer” in the soundtrack adds depth and emotion, especially for those invested in the characters.

The enduring quality of this film is yet to be proven, as it seems rather shallow in depth. It caters heavily to fans, so adjust your rating if that’s not what you’re looking for. However, the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” recognizes and embraces its role as fan service – without a hint of embarrassment.
