Deadpool & Wolverine director lays out his vision for his new Star Wars movie
As a seasoned gamer and Star Wars aficionado who has navigated countless virtual galaxies and witnessed the rise and fall of many a space saga, I must say, the upcoming Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars film has piqued my interest. With a background that spans from Deadpool to Stranger Things, Levy seems poised to deliver a Star Wars experience that is both unique and engaging.
Ever since I last saw “The Rise of Skywalker” in 2019 at the cinema, there’s been an exciting anticipation building among us Star Wars fans. While there have been some hiccups and delays along the way, rest assured that the story of a galaxy far, far away is far from over. The powers-that-be at Lucasfilm and Disney are tirelessly working behind the scenes to bring us more adventures.
In recent times, numerous filmmakers such as Taika Waititi, Damon Lindelof, Rian Johnson, Patty Jenkins, and the showrunners of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, have attempted to produce Star Wars films, but these projects have often failed. However, it appears that Disney has recently shown a greater commitment to its major intellectual properties, so it’s likely that some of the current Star Wars projects will come to fruition. Levy’s project could potentially be one of them.
Levy, known for directing episodes of “Stranger Things” and the “Night at the Museum” films, discussed his ideas for “Star Wars” on an episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. He stated, “There are only so many occasions that ‘Star Wars’ movies can revisit the same period in the timeline.” He added, “I don’t want to create a ‘Star Wars’ movie that is repetitive of others, and I have no intention of making one that needs to complement another film.”
I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me in tone and characters. There’s certainly the Force, and a connection to something bigger than our individual selves, and the way that that can make us powerful. Those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfillment – that’s Star Wars to me.
It seems like Levy will be helming a project that can function independently. Disney has ventured off the typical path with Star Wars, even if it doesn’t always yield successful results; they recently axed the TV series The Acolyte, which was set on a fresh timeline with new characters. However, this shouldn’t discourage them from continuing to innovate, correct?
Levy was additionally queried if there were any specific actors he had in mind for the film. “Indeed, you’ve got me spot on! To some extent, yes. However, I’d rather not elaborate further on that.” (Smiles)
All that’s worth saying there is that Levy has directed a number of Ryan Reynolds movies, including Free Guy, The Adam Project, and of course Deadpool & Wolverine. Reynolds draws big crowds, so who wouldn’t want them in their movie? Put a pin in that one.
This upcoming film, penned by Jonathan Tropper, known for penning “The Adam Project” and contributing to shows like “See” and “Warrior,” hasn’t yet been released. In the meantime, the next “Star Wars” production scheduled by Disney is “Skeleton Crew,” set to debut on Disney+ on December 3.
