Deadpool & Wolverine almost included a Nicolas Cage cameo
As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who’s spent countless hours poring over the pages of Marvel comics and watched every single Marvel Cinematic Universe film since the very first Iron Man, I must say that Deadpool & Wolverine was a dream come true for me. The action, the humor, the fourth-wall breaks – it was everything I’d hoped for!
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but imagine how electrifying it would have been if Nicolas Cage had joined the scene in Deadpool & Wolverine. Rumors swirled that he was in discussions for a role, but alas, it didn’t quite pan out. Even so, the celebrity cameos this series has had are more than enough to keep us on the edge of our seats!
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the third movie of the Deadpool series unfolds its story around our titled characters, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. These characters join forces in an attempt to thwart a wicked entity that poses a danger not only to Earth but also to the entire galaxy.
In this story that jumps between numerous alternate realities, there were ample opportunities for guest appearances. However, Cage chose not to return as the character Johnny Blaze from Ghost Rider, which left certain fans feeling let down.
Reynolds and director Shawn Levy shared with Collider that they indeed attempted to have Cage rejoin the cast, but it didn’t work out as planned. They expressed this by saying, “We did consider having Cage return. We definitely discussed it. However, in the end, it didn’t happen.”
Despite the movie’s critical and financial triumph, Ryan Reynolds expressed uncertainty about his involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He mentioned that he and the director, David Leitch, created the film with no plans for a follow-up or further storyline.
He expressed that Shawn and himself have been very explicit about it. In a caring manner, he mentioned that discussing such an exceptional urban predicament for humans as the one they are facing is like a studio asking, “What’s our next project?” or “How can we create something more?”
The film was designed as a standalone piece, not an advertisement for another movie. It wasn’t intended to promote anything else, and I find immense pleasure in creating such a movie.
As someone who’s been through my fair share of adventures, I must admit that at this very moment, I can’t say for certain if I’ll ever don the Deadpool suit again. Truth be told, it’d bring a smile to my face if I could, but for now, it seems like it’s best to put it aside and let fate decide what lies ahead. It’s all part of the journey, after all.
Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in cinemas.
