'Deadpool' star Ryan Reynolds spent his salary to keep screenwriters on the set

As a huge fan of Ryan Reynolds and his unwavering dedication to bringing the character of Deadpool to life on the big screen, I am in awe of his commitment and determination. When he shared that he let go of getting paid for “Deadpool” so that his co-writers could be present on set, it only added to my admiration for him.

Ryan Reynolds forgoed compensation for “Deadpool” to enable the presence of other writers on the film set.

“Ten years after the initial plan, I was finally able to produce ‘Deadpool’ (NYT interview with Reynolds). At that time, I didn’t entertain thoughts of success for this project. In fact, I relinquished my payment for the movie just so Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick could join me on set, serving as our makeshift writers room since they weren’t permitted by the production.”

During an episode of AMC’s “Geeking Out” in 2016, Reese and Wernick disclosed that Reynolds had paid for their involvement in the creative process. In simpler terms, Reynolds funded their participation in the show’s creative aspects.

For six years, Wernick and a dedicated team consisting of Ryan and Tim Miller worked on the project. Surprisingly, Fox didn’t cover our expenses to be present at the set. However, Ryan Reynolds personally funded our presence using his own funds.

During an interview with The New York Times, Reynolds mentioned that working under a tight budget and time constraint actually helped the project.

Reynolds shared that the production of the movie offered him an important lesson in multiple ways. He explained, “The lack of time and money made this project unique. With fewer resources for grand spectacle, we were forced to concentrate on developing characters instead. This was a challenging yet rewarding experience for me, as I hadn’t felt this level of investment in every detail for quite some time.” He further added, “I yearned for that feeling not only on ‘Deadpool,’ but on any project.”

Initially, creating the first Deadpool film was a passionate project for Reynolds. This passion led to the production of two follow-ups. The upcoming third installment, titled “Deadpool with Wolverine,” is scheduled for release in theaters on July 26.

In the movie, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is depicted healing from his wounds. During this time, he crosses paths with Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, known for his non-stop chatter.
