DCU’s Checkmate: 5 Heroes Who Could Join Peacemaker’s New Team

The second season of *Peacemaker* concluded with the creation of a new spy organization called Checkmate. Built by a group of young heroes known as the 11th Street Kids and some former ARGUS agents who weren’t happy with the status quo, Checkmate looks like it will genuinely fight for what’s right. Considering who’s on the team and its origins in the comics, we might also see some lesser-known superheroes show up in the DC Universe.

What characters could Checkmate introduce into the DCU?

Checkmate began as a division of the Suicide Squad, dealing with global concerns. Later, it became its own organization. Eventually, Checkmate evolved into a completely independent agency overseen by the United Nations, and its ranks included people with superpowers and costumed heroes.

It looks like the Checkmate team in the DC Universe has quickly advanced to its most recent version. Considering the team first appeared in the solo comics of Peacemaker and Vigilante in the 1980s, it’s probable they’ll add more heroes to their roster. The comics featured members like Mr. Terrific and Maxwell Lord, both of whom have already been introduced into the DC Universe.

Arsenal

Roy Harper was the original Speedy, fighting crime with Oliver Queen. After overcoming heroin addiction, he turned his life around, working for the Drug Enforcement Agency and helping other addicts as a counselor. This led him to Checkmate, where he honed his skills with weapons and first became known as Arsenal. There’s a chance Roy could be brought into Checkmate again, potentially paving the way for Green Arrow or the Titans to join the DC Universe.

Huntress

Helena Bertinelli, like Batman, came from a wealthy family and experienced the loss of her parents through violence. However, unlike Bruce Wayne, Helena’s family was a major criminal organization in Gotham. As the Huntress, she operates outside Batman’s strict rule against killing. Considering this, and her past associations with groups like Checkmate and Spiral in the comics, she would be a strong fit for the DCU’s violent version of Checkmate.

Fire

Beatriz Bonilla da Costa began her career as a model in Brazil before becoming a government spy. After an accident gave her the power to create green flames, she joined both the Global Guardians and the Justice League. Eventually, she was recruited by Checkmate, where she became known simply as Fire, though she’s used other code names. While often working alongside her close friend Ice, Bea was also capable of operating independently during her time with Checkmate, and could easily do so within the broader DC Universe.

Manhunter

Kate Spencer became frustrated with the limitations of the legal system as a federal prosecutor. This led her to become the Manhunter, a vigilante who pursued criminals the law couldn’t touch. Although she wasn’t officially part of the Checkmate organization in the comics, she collaborated with them, even representing Wonder Woman in court. Considering her tendency towards forceful methods, she’d be a natural fit alongside team members like Peacemaker, Vigilante, and Judomaster.

Green Lantern Alan Scott

Alan Scott, one of the original members of the Justice Society of America, surprisingly joined Checkmate. As the first Green Lantern, he became Checkmate’s White King, managing their intelligence work after the team was reorganized under the United Nations. Evidence within the DC Universe – specifically a mural in the Justice Gang’s hideout – confirms the Justice Society’s existence. Including Alan Scott in Checkmate’s story is a way to further establish the Justice Society’s history within the DC Universe.
