DC’s Green Lantern Show Trailer Sets Up Major Justice League Connection

The series Lanterns is scheduled to come out in 2026, and recent news suggests it could tie into the larger DC Universe, particularly with the Justice League. Although Nathan Fillion’s portrayal of Guy Gardner was a highlight in Superman, I’m really excited to see the first appearances of the two heroes who are likely to be the central Green Lanterns in James Gunn’s DCU.

Aaron Pierre stars as John Stewart and Kyle Gardner plays Hal Jordan in DC’s Lanterns, a new series centered around a mystery unfolding on Earth. The show aims for a dark and suspenseful atmosphere reminiscent of True Detective, while also incorporating various DC characters and exploring the broader cosmic side of the franchise. More details about the story are now available.

The First Trailer For HBO’s Green Lantern Series Reveals A Twist

The first trailer for the upcoming HBO Max series Lanterns was shown at an event in Brazil (reported by Omelete). While the trailer isn’t available online yet, details have emerged revealing a surprising plot point: Hal Jordan wasn’t the first person to train John Stewart.

Instead of being a main character, this experienced Green Lantern is filling in for someone else – though the trailer doesn’t say who. Many fans know Kilowog as the tough drill instructor for the Green Lantern Corps, so he could be John Stewart’s original teacher. However, there’s another character who works with the Justice League that could also be a great fit for the role.

John Stewart’s Trainer Could Be A Justice League Character

In the 2001 Justice League animated series, Katma Tui mentored John Stewart and became his romantic interest, though their relationship didn’t last. In the comic books, Katma Tui is originally from Korugar, the home planet of the villain Sinestro. With Sinestro appearing in the upcoming series Lanterns, played by Ulrich Thomsen, the show might explore this connection between the characters in live-action.

James Gunn recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the animated Justice League shows are influencing his work on the DC Universe. When asked if series like Justice League Unlimited (a follow-up to the 2001 Justice League) and Young Justice played a role in his DCU planning, Gunn confirmed that they absolutely did.

Adding to the reasons why Katma Tui could be John Stewart’s first trainer – something hinted at in the Lanterns trailer – she was brought back as a Black Lantern in the DC Comics. Although the show hasn’t confirmed if Black Hand will be in season one, rumors strongly suggest Garret Dillahunt will play the villain (according to @homeofdcu on X). Katma Tui seems like a natural fit for the Lanterns series in several ways.
