Just a few months before its release as part of the DC Universe, a producer revealed a surprising plot detail for the upcoming series Lanterns and how it connects to James Gunn’s Superman movie. The series stars Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as iconic Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lanterns creator Chris Mundy shared some details about the show’s plot. He explained that the series will unfold across multiple timelines, starting in a small town in 2016. A second timeline will also be featured, adding to the intrigue. Mundy hinted that the show will ultimately solve two separate mysteries as the story progresses.
Regarding the 2016 storyline, Mundy explained it will focus on the characters and their development, particularly the dynamic between established figures and the next generation. He said this creates a lot of interesting conflict that they explore in the early part of the story.
Lanterns’ Multiple Timelines Has a Superman Connection
The story begins with a shooting in a quiet, rural town that Hal Jordan is monitoring. The situation is complicated by the fact that the investigation involves both the Lantern Corps and the local sheriff, creating a unique jurisdictional challenge. This conflict serves as the starting point for unraveling the mystery in the town.
The show is a high-quality drama that blends DC’s iconic heroes with the gritty, atmospheric storytelling style of True Detective. Hal reluctantly teams up with new recruit John Stewart to solve a central mystery. The story also incorporates events from James Gunn’s Superman movie, which takes place ten years prior, and features a connection fans will be excited to discover: Guy Gardner.
Mundy has confirmed Guy Gardner will appear in Lanterns, and playfully described his character as “fabulously obnoxious.” He also mentioned fans will see him “in the show a few different times.” However, don’t expect to see many other well-known characters from the Lanterns comics just yet.
He mentioned that many characters from the established mythology and storyline exist, but while they’re discussed, they won’t play an active role or interact with the main characters this season.
Fortunately, Lanterns was planned to have multiple seasons, allowing new characters to be introduced as the story progresses. Mundy playfully hinted, “I definitely couldn’t tell you how the story will ultimately end.”
Lanterns Showrunner Teases Sinestro’s Involvement in Season 1
A major character from the Green Lantern stories appearing in Season 1 is Sinestro, a former Green Lantern who was once Hal Jordan’s mentor and friend. The show will explore their history, as Sinestro is typically portrayed as a villain. The creators are particularly interested in the parallel between Sinestro training Hal, and Hal now training John Stewart.
We’re fascinated by how coaching styles evolve – what techniques get passed down, what doesn’t, and how much of it is just natural personality,” he explained. “We discussed how coaching relates to parenting and general training methods. For example, what valuable lessons did Hal Jordan learn from Sinestro, and what were the negative influences? It raises a lot of thought-provoking questions.
Lanterns premieres on HBO Max on Aug. 16, 2026.
