DC Studios Confirms 6th DCU Show in Active Development at HBO

DC Studios has officially announced that they are currently working on the sixth series within their DC Universe, which is being developed for both HBO and HBO Max. A significant aspect of the new strategy by co-CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn, involves producing content not only for theaters but also for streaming platforms and cable television. Fans have already experienced this with the release of “Creature Commandos” (which became available on Max in December 2024), and they can look forward to the arrival of “Peacemaker” Season 2.

The enthusiasm for TV shows, particularly those from HBO, is showing no signs of abating, as there’s plenty more content in store. Shows like “Lanterns”, “Paradise Lost”, and “Waller” are slated to debut on HBO and Max within the next few years. Moreover, the anticipated “Booster Gold” series has made a notable stride towards its launch.

It’s been announced that the Booster Gold HBO series is now moving forward in its production, receiving a pilot order from the creator of Our Flag Means Death, David Jenkins.

The upcoming TV series, previously mentioned by James Gunn as part of the DCU lineup in January 2023, has progressed to the pilot stage. Should it secure a complete series order, Ava DuVernay is poised to oversee its production.

As of now, no actor is officially linked to the “Booster Gold” project; however, Deadline mentioned that James Gunn has clarified that Kumail Nanjiani, who gained fame in “Eternals,” was not being considered for the main role contrary to popular fan speculation.

Booster Gold centers around its namesake character, Michael Jon “Booster” Carter (also known as Booster Gold), a charismatic time-traveler from the future who relies on advanced technology for his superpowers. This iconic figure has long been adored by DC Comics fans, leaving many eager to witness his potential portrayal in the DC Universe.

Peacemaker Season 2

The upcoming DCU TV series that’s next in line is “Peacemaker” Season 2. Picking up from the riotously funny R-rated escapades of the 2022 first season, this show stars John Cena as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker – a man with a shiny dome who will stop at nothing to preserve peace.

In simple terms, “Peacemaker” Season 2 is set to debut on both HBO and HBO Max on August 21st. This second season will delve into how the show’s universe and characters will be integrated into the DC Universe following the initial release of the first season in the older DCEU.

Lanterns

The television series, titled “Lanterns,” is distinguished as the first completely original live-action TV production within the DC Universe. Starring Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler, this HBO drama follows Green Lantern characters John Stewart and Hal Jordan as they investigate a series of murders in the Midwest region of the United States.

The highly potent drama, reminiscent of HBO’s “True Detective,” has sparked much anticipation, positioning it as one of the most eagerly awaited DC Universe productions to be unveiled thus far. “Lanterns” is tentatively set for release in 2026.

Creature Commandos Season 2

Although most consider Superman as the initial launch of the DCU, there was actually an earlier creation: Creature Commandos. The adult-oriented animated series is set for a second run, continuing to center around its rough-edged group of ethically complex anti-heroes who aren’t shy about using colorful language.

The second season of “Creature Commandos” is currently in production, but unlike the first season where James Gunn was solely responsible for scriptwriting, it appears they are working with a team of writers this time around.

Waller

“Waller” is among the DCU TV series with the longest development period, unveiled along with the new DC universe in January 2022. This HBO show will focus on Viola Davis’ character Amanda Waller (as portrayed in the Suicide Squad movies), who manages ARGUS – a government entity that manipulates Metahumans for its own ends.

The series is indeed being developed further, but it’s progressing at a slower pace than anticipated.

Paradise Lost

One ongoing project at DC Studios that was initially announced as part of the DC Universe is titled Paradise Lost. This HBO series is rumored to have a grand, epic quality similar to Game of Thrones, but it will be set in Wonder Woman’s homeland, Themyscira, many decades before she becomes prominent in the DC Universe.

Despite the growing excitement about a potential full-fledged Wonder Woman film in the DC Studios, the epic tale of Paradise Lost continues to unfold.
