Fans have even more to be excited about after Batman’s big debut in the DCU movies later this year. DC Comics just revealed a new story focusing on the character Clayface.

DC’s upcoming six-issue comic series, Clayface: Celebrity Dirt, is a horror story focusing on Batman villain Basil Karlo. After escaping Arkham Towers and planning a return to crime, Clayface discovers someone is already using his identity and past fame. The series, written by Jude Ellison S. Doyle with art by Fran Galán, will be released on July 8th, just before the new DCU movie comes out in October. It’s described as a dark and twisted tale of ambition and ultimately, self-destruction.

DC’s announcement for the new comic, Clayface: Celebrity Dirt, highlights the story’s blend of horror elements. The publisher describes it as combining body horror, a look behind the scenes of the entertainment industry, and the gritty atmosphere of Gotham City. The comic will feature striking artwork and explore the troubled mind of Clayface, a villain who can take any form but still battles his own inner demons.

DC’s Clayface: Celebrity Dirt is a chilling story that mixes psychological thrills, unsettling body horror, and biting satire—a perfect fit for the character of Basil Karlo. It’s described as a disturbing look at the dark side of fame, where even a perfect public image can crumble. The series explores themes of fame, changing who you are, and the consequences of trying to manipulate public perception, all as Basil faces someone who has achieved his lifelong dreams.

Playing as Clayface is way more than just jumpscares and figuring out who I am. When I came back, everything had changed! There’s this weird plague turning people into… well, let’s just say things, and to make matters worse, some actor is living my life – Basil’s life – and is way more famous than I ever was! It’s seriously messed up.

A troubling trend surrounding the new celebrity forces Basil to deal with painful memories and uncover the truth behind both this situation and another mystery. His investigation takes him into the complicated history of the Clayface family, where he comes face-to-face with one of their most unpredictable and dangerous relatives.

Clayface: Celebrity Dirt Creatives Discuss Crafting the New Series

The team behind the new Clayface series felt it was a great project to work on. According to writer Doyle, “Basil Karlo is a deeply flawed but relatable character within the Batman mythos. He has the power to transform into anyone, yet he’s unable to overcome his own inner struggles. He appears flawless on the surface, but is actually falling apart underneath.”

Honestly, one of the coolest things about giving Basil the spotlight – or giving someone that platform, really – was that we could explore some really interesting themes. We dug into what it means to take responsibility for your actions, how people can truly redeem themselves, and how to spot the difference between someone genuinely trying to be better and someone just using their popularity to cover up bad behavior. I personally loved working with Basil’s character, and I’m really hoping his fans are going to love the series too!

Galán, the artist for the comic series, shared that what excites them most about Jude’s writing is the way it balances reality and illusion, beauty and darkness. They described it as a wonderful opportunity to create the artwork.

Clayface: Celebrity Dirt #1 goes on sale July 8, and the Clayface movie hits theaters on Oct. 23.
