On the very day the initial issue was launched, DC unexpectedly halted the much-awaited Red Hood series. This decision stemmed from controversial remarks made by the series’ writer, Gretchen Felker-Martin, concerning the passing of Charlie Kirk. These comments resulted in the suspension of her Bluesky account as well.
On September 10, 2025, Charlie Kirk was shot during a speech at Utah Valley University. In response to this news, Felker-Martin wrote on social media, “Sending thoughts and prayers, you despicable individual.” Later, Felker-Martin added, “I hope the bullet served Charlie Kirk well.
Later in the day, DC issued a statement to retailers, confirming the termination of the Red Hood series. This series, which was slated for a second and third issue, is now no longer continuing. The publisher has also extended a credit to all invoices for unsold copies of the initial issue.
Why is DC canceling Red Hood?
When asked about the reasons for the cancellation, DC Comics responded with this statement: “At DC Comics, we prioritize our creators and audience, and believe in the freedom to express personal opinions peacefully. Statements that seem to encourage hostility or violence are not aligned with DC’s code of conduct.
The statement doesn’t explicitly call out Felker-Martin, but it appears that the cancellation was a result of comments she made on social media.
As a seasoned movie critic, I’ve come to expect the unexpected – especially when it comes to the comic book world. And once again, DC Comics has found itself in the headlines for canceling projects over troubling creator issues. In 2018, the publisher put an end to Border Town following allegations of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse against writer Eric M. Esquivel by a former partner. Fast forward to this year, and we saw the cancellation of a special facsimile reprint edition of The Sandman #8 due to accusations of sexual misconduct leveled at author Neil Gaiman. It’s crucial for publishers like DC to hold their creators accountable and ensure that their stories align with the values we as readers uphold.
It’s regrettable that the planned Red Hood series has been cancelled, for several reasons. One significant factor is that the loss of jobs for the art team, who weren’t at fault, adds to the disappointment. The book had garnered positive reviews, including from SuperHeroHype. Although it might seem puzzling, DC’s decision to cancel the series instead of finding a new writer to carry on after just one issue can be attributed to various internal considerations.
