The director of Blue Beetle shared encouraging news for fans who want to see Xolo Maridueña reprise his role as Jaime Reyes in James Gunn’s new DC Universe. Although Blue Beetle started as a project under the previous DC leadership and was initially planned for streaming, James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, quickly established Jaime Reyes as the “first DCU character.” Despite a disappointing performance in theaters, the film received positive reviews and included a scene after the credits hinting that the original Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, is still out there.
I was so excited to read that Ángel Manuel Soto, the director of Blue Beetle, recently spoke with TopMob about what’s next for Jaime Reyes in James Gunn’s DCU! He’s currently busy with his new film, The Wrecking Crew, but he did hint that they have been talking about Blue Beetle’s future. He couldn’t share any details just yet, which is frustrating, but it’s still amazing to know they’re considering where Jaime fits into the bigger picture!
Someone asked the director of ‘Blue Beetle’ if a sequel was possible now that James Gunn is leading the DC Universe. They also wanted to know if the director had spoken with Gunn about potentially working on future DC projects.
I’ve had some discussions about it, but I can’t share any details right now. That’s all I can confirm – talks are underway.
He also mentioned that Gunn has repeatedly expressed his intention to continue the Blue Beetle storyline, hinting that positive developments are on the horizon.
James Gunn has publicly stated his commitment to including Blue Beetle in the DC Universe, which means positive developments are on the horizon for Jaime Reyes and his family.
According to Deadline, DC Studios is creating an animated sequel series to Blue Beetle, bringing back Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes. The series will be on HBO Max and directed by Miguel Puga, with writing by Cristian Martinez. Ángel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, who directed and wrote the 2023 Blue Beetle movie, will be executive producers on this new DC Universe project.
We haven’t heard much about the project since then, and DC Studios hasn’t officially said what’s next for Blue Beetle. However, actor Xolo Maridueña mentioned to TopMob last year that they were aiming for a sequel to come out in 2026, though it’s currently unknown if that timeline is still accurate.
DC Studios’ Blue Beetle Sequel Is More Important Than You Think

A potential sequel to Blue Beetle could focus on the revelation at the end of the first movie – that Ted Kord is still alive – and introduce him to more viewers. This would strongly link the Blue Beetle story to James Gunn’s new DC Universe, especially because of Kord’s history with Booster Gold, who is also getting his own show on HBO Max.
There was a lot of speculation that Xolo Maridueña would make a surprise appearance in Season 2 of Peacemaker. However, it now seems DC Studios is planning to bring him back for an animated project that might be released later this year.
Even though we haven’t heard much about Blue Beetle recently, James Gunn previously said the DC Universe would release two films and two TV shows every year. Currently, 2026 is scheduled to have two movies – Supergirl and Clayface – and one TV show, Lanterns. This leaves room for Blue Beetle to potentially be released this year.
DC Studios has a key casting opportunity with the character Ted Kord, who might reappear in the upcoming Booster Gold series and other DC Universe projects. Concept art for the character looked a lot like Jason Sudeikis, the star of Ted Lasso, leading fans to speculate he could be the perfect choice for the role.
