DC Announces 2026 Supergirl Movie’s Unsurprising Genre

The upcoming 2026 *Supergirl* movie from DC has officially been categorized by genre – though it’s not a surprising reveal. *Supergirl* is one of the first projects in development for the new DC Universe, overseen by DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. Following the *Superman* movie slated for July 2025, excitement is growing to see how this new cinematic universe will unfold.

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, described the upcoming *Supergirl* movie as a space adventure. He was asked by Rolling Stone if the war between humans and metahumans hinted at in the *Peacemaker* Season 2 finale would be explored in projects like *Lanterns* and *Supergirl*. Gunn explained that this storyline will be woven throughout the DC universe, and specifically highlighted that *Supergirl* will be a space-based story, similar in scope to his *Guardians of the Galaxy* films for Marvel.

Those stories were already included in our plans from the beginning. They contribute to the bigger picture, but also stand alone. ‘Supergirl,’ in particular, feels like a classic space adventure, similar to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.

Honestly, it doesn’t shock me at all that *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* leans so heavily into space adventure. It’s a huge part of what makes the comic so good! Written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely, it’s basically Kara Zor-El heading out on this incredible journey through deep space, and she’s got Krypto, her super-powered dog, right there with her. It’s a really cool setup.

The second film in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe will be *Supergirl*, and it’s the fifth movie planned for the first phase, called ‘Gods and Monsters’. Though the story hasn’t been fully announced, the film will feature Milly Alcock, David Krumholtz, Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Jason Momoa, who will make a brief appearance as Lobo. *Supergirl* is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on June 26, 2026.

Why Space Adventure Genre Makes Sense for 2026’s Supergirl

The new *Supergirl* movie from DC Studios draws heavily from classic comic book storylines, and the “space adventure” approach feels like a perfect fit. The story is told through the eyes of Ruthye Marye Knoll (played by Eve Ridley), an alien girl who joins Kara Zor-El on her quest to avenge her father’s death.

The new Superman movie will likely feature scenes on Earth, following a brief appearance by Milly Alcock, but fans are especially excited to see the alien worlds the story will explore. This film is also important because it will help launch other projects planned for 2027, including *Man of Tomorrow*, and will be key to building out the larger DC universe.

The new Supergirl series will showcase how Kara Zor-El’s journey and background differ significantly from her cousin Superman’s. The show will delve into Kara’s more challenging past as she travels the universe, offering a fresh perspective on the DC Universe – one that expands beyond Earth, unlike the original Superman story which mostly took place on our planet.

This story will continue elements introduced in *Lanterns*, offering fans their first glimpse of the many alien species who are members of the Green Lantern Corps in the DC Universe.

Viewers will soon get a better idea of what to expect from *Supergirl* when the first trailer drops, giving them a glimpse of the expansive universe this exciting space adventure will explore.
