Days Gone Remastered: The Underrated Zombie Game That Deserves a Second Chance

As Dinah Washington almost sang, what a difference six-and-a-bit years makes.
Initially, when Sony launched Days Gone as an exclusive blockbuster for PlayStation in 2019, many gamers found it underwhelming, and there’s a good reason for that.
In contrast, here’s another tale about a melancholic zombie, starring a gruff, silent protagonist, but The Last of Us on PlayStation offers a more compelling experience.
Once again, I found myself confronted with an open-world quest list, leaving me wondering how much more of this I could handle after being satiated by the latest installments of Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry. It’s as if they just can’t let go!
Moreover, this game pushed the boundaries of the available technology to its limits, sometimes even beyond what it could handle. The overall experience was somewhat disappointing.
Over time, the initial release of Days Gone has undergone refinement and growth, resulting in a dedicated fanbase who appreciate it.
Following the recent enhancement of Oblivion remaster, it now boasts an even more attractive and seamless rendition on PlayStation 5. Perhaps, it’s time for a fresh appraisal.

Indeed, some of the initial apprehensions persist; if you’re opting for a single PlayStation zombie game, it would be wise to choose The Last of Us.
However, following the remaster, you can more effortlessly spot the unique aspects of Days Gone, including the pleasure of using Deacon’s motorcycle as your main transportation through the game’s rain-soaked, forested region of Oregon.
The PS5’s DualSense controller provides an exceptional tactile experience, and beyond that, you soon realize that this bike in the game becomes a trusted companion, something valuable not just to use but also to care for and modify.
Additionally, Deacon sometimes faces massive, boiling zombie swarms, requiring all available resources: firearms, explosives, and even clever thinking.
It’s not surprising at all that the updated version of the game now includes a ‘Horde’ mode, allowing players to experience the imaginative chaos beyond the main plot. Truly, it’s an outstanding addition.
Indeed, I might as well say I’ve been reborn. Sony has an impressive portfolio when it comes to their exclusive games, including The Last Of Us, Bloodborne, Spider-Man, Death Stranding, among others. Now, Days Gone fits right in alongside those titles.
