Daymé Arocena's Afro-Caribbean music graces Grand Performances stage

As a movie buff with a deep appreciation for live music and cultural experiences, I was absolutely captivated by the vibrant and diverse Latin music scene that unfolded at California Plaza last weekend. The energy and passion of Daymé Arocena, supported by Grand Performances‘ commitment to showcasing both local and global acts, created an unforgettable evening that brought together people of all ages and backgrounds.

Over the weekend, Downtown L.A.’s California Plaza attracted a diverse crowd of people of all ages with Daymé Arocena’s unique Caribbean style.

On a Saturday night, De Los teamed up with Grand Performances for their weekly summer concert series to enjoy some lively Latin music. The event, hosted by KCRW DJ Wyldeflower, showcased various types of Latin music. Pan Dulce brought the reggae vibes, while Arocena explored new territories in Latin pop music.

At the onset of the event, Wyldeflower started the vibe with a selection of beloved Cubano tunes. As the music flowed into the night, people rose from their picnic mats and converged at an impromptu dance area. Wyldeflower occasionally shared stories behind each track, adding to the experience like a radio host.

Starting from 1987, Grand Performances has been providing a venue for free outdoor shows. This non-profit group is dedicated to showcasing a mix of international and local artists. Previously featured performers include Stevie Wonder, Aloe Blacc, and Ana Tijoux.

Canyon Cody, Grand Performances’ marketing and communications director, expressed their commitment to reflecting the multicultural identity of the city they serve, which is over half Latino. For Canyon, this entails showcasing Latin genres such as cumbia, salsa, and mariachi, all of which are included in their lineup for this year. Yet, it goes beyond music; it’s also about featuring Latino performers representing a diverse range of musical styles.

John Moody, 56, says Grand Performances’ concerts are something he looks forward to every year.

“Moody expressed that the music is consistently enjoyable and represents an opportunity for him to discover new tunes. ‘I’m all for it when the city invests in events like these with my taxes,’ he added, emphasizing the significance of such occasions in enriching urban living.”

Following Wyldeflower’s conclusion of her performance, Alan Lightner and Pan Dulca continued the vibrant atmosphere. With a focus on the steel pan, they harmoniously blended the rhythms of reggae, cha-cha, and jazz.

As the sun set, the cityscape was illuminated by the shining searchlights on the towering buildings. The melodic tones of African Spiritual music filled the air. Initially, those in the audience remained seated, but once Arocena emerged on stage, their resolve wavered. Clad in a shimmering skirt, she captivated everyone with her robust vocals that resonated deeply within the crowd.

Originating in Havana, Cuba, the main act was born with a deep-rooted passion for music. Nurtured as a choir conductor with classical training, she later discovered the liberating essence of jazz. The musical influences that shape Arocena’s art can be traced throughout her latest album, “Alkemi.” This thoughtfully curated project aims to represent and uplift the Black perspective within Latin pop music.

Erica Sewell, a devoted fan of Arocena for years, described her experience as follows: “It’s common for me to have a deeply spiritual connection with her. I often compare her to both Aretha Franklin and an Orisha priestess. Her singing voice has the soulful vibrato of a gospel singer, while her presence evokes the sacred energy of a Yoruba priestess.”

As I watched the Cuban singer-songwriter take the stage, I could feel the electricity in the air. She urged the crowd to bring more energy, and we responded with enthusiasm. By the finale of her set, everyone was up on their feet, moving and grooving along with the music. The audience and I were completely captivated by her performance.
