Dax Shepard explains why he and Kristen Bell are raising their daughters to talk back and be disrespectful

Dax Shepard recently shared the surprising reason why he and Kristen Bell encourage their daughters, Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 10, to challenge them and express disagreement – even if it comes across as rude.

Dax Shepard, the 50-year-old host of the Armchair Expert podcast, was on vacation in Nashville with his family when a friend told him she was upset by his kids’ behavior. She felt they were disrespectful and acted spoiled.

‘And I said, “You’re dead right,”‘ Dax recalled on his podcast Monday.

I know it can seem disrespectful when they challenge authority, but my main concern is preparing them for difficult situations. Specifically, if they’re ever in a work environment with a problematic boss, I want them to be able to stand up for themselves.

I encourage them to stand up for themselves, even if I disagree with their perspective. I want them to be assertive and not afraid to challenge things.

Shepard explained that he and Kristen Bell, 45, were prepared to handle their daughters’ somewhat disruptive behavior while dining out, though a friend found it a little awkward.

“I can take care of that,” she said. “And I’m also pushing for something else that will specifically benefit women,” added the actress, known for her role in the film Idiocracy.

Reese Witherspoon was a guest on Dax’s show and listened as he and his wife, who are from Michigan, described their unusual approach to raising kids. She then shared some advice specifically for dads of daughters.

What you tell your daughters truly matters and leaves a lasting impression. As the Oscar-winning actress explained, words have a permanent effect – they’re like writing with a permanent marker, not something easily erased.

A lot of what people need to build confidence and self-esteem, understand what they want in a relationship, and figure out their goals at different stages of life – whether in their twenties or thirties – they often learn from their fathers.

Shepard explained that her guiding principle since meeting them has been, ‘It’s okay, they’re going to end up dating me.’ She then wondered what she needed to become that would make them actively seek her out.

I believe when someone wants to talk, you should give them your full attention – make eye contact, really listen, and show them you value what they have to say. I want them to receive that same level of respect and consideration from whoever they’re with.

Kristen and her partner have been keeping a low profile on Instagram, and Kristen recently canceled a planned appearance on TODAY after facing criticism for a wedding anniversary post she made on October 17th that many found insensitive.

Bell shared a message celebrating her twelfth wedding anniversary, recalling a strange statement her husband once made. He reportedly told her, ‘I would never kill you. Some men have, but even though I might have reasons to, I never would.’

To make matters worse, October was Domestic Violence Awareness month.

According to a source close to the couple, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard both have strong personalities and can quickly become upset, even over minor disagreements. They often tease each other, but sometimes a playful comment unintentionally hurts the other’s feelings. Despite this sometimes rocky dynamic, they always seem to resolve their issues.

Dax and his Emmy-nominated partner sometimes go days without speaking after a big fight, but they make a point of not letting their children know when they’re arguing.

Despite being very different people, and known for openly using swear words even around their children, the couple first met at a dinner party back in 2007.
