Dax Shepard became very emotional when remembering a kind thing his wife, Kristen Bell, did while his father was nearing the end of his life.
In a recent interview with Anderson Cooper about dealing with loss, 51-year-old Shepard shared his personal story.
The actor recalled taking care of his father, Dave Shepard, in a Detroit hospital after his diagnosis with small-cell carcinoma in 2012. He felt overwhelmed by the constant stream of visitors who came to offer their support.
I was getting frustrated that I couldn’t simply be with my dad, and it was becoming really overwhelming, she explained.
He briefly left the hospital to call his fiancée, Bell, who was 45, and share how he was feeling. She was seven months pregnant and had remained in Los Angeles.
‘I was complaining, and she said, “It’s okay, I’m here. Look to the left,”‘ Shepard recalled as he broke down in tears.
He continued, ‘Just keep in mind, I was in Detroit while she was in California. And there she was, seven months pregnant, standing right there beside me.’
Shepard spoke highly of his wife, calling her incredibly perceptive. He explained that she sensed he was having a difficult time, quietly flew to the hospital without telling him, and was waiting by the car when he arrived. He affectionately called her a ‘champ’ for her quick thinking and support.
The couple then got to introduce his father to their unborn child.
The actor described being able to feel his partner’s baby bump, and Cooper shared a picture of the touching moment with fans.
Shepard commented on how adorable his daughter looked, noting her little belly. He originally posted the picture on Instagram in June 2022 for Father’s Day.
Cooper also got emotional, as he read aloud a 2013 blog post Shepard wrote about the tender moment.
She raised her shirt, and he gently placed his hand on her growing belly. He kept it there for almost an hour, beaming with happiness. He was lost for words, but deeply connected to the baby they were expecting.
He missed the birth, but he got to meet his baby soon after, and it was incredibly moving. It’s a moment I’ll cherish forever. I’ll always be grateful to my wife for giving him that final, wonderful experience.
Dave died just three months before Shepard and Bell’s daughter Lincoln was born.
They got married in October and welcomed their second daughter, Delta, in December 2014.
During his conversation with Cooper, Shepard also talked about his parents’ divorce when he was a young child. He shared how his father battled addiction and admitted he used to judge him for it.
Everything shifted for him when his father received a cancer diagnosis. Cooper came across another entry on Shepard’s blog that talked about the importance of forgiveness.
Facing cancer has a surprising effect: it makes you let go of old resentments. What once felt like a huge weight of anger simply disappeared, becoming something small and manageable. This led to apologies, heartfelt tears, and a lot of warm, long hugs.
Shepard explained that having a child helped him understand and empathize with his own father more deeply.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard’s relationship for years, and it’s so lovely to see them sharing this sweet moment. It’s especially heartwarming considering they recently addressed some past comments that sparked a bit of discussion about their relationship. It just shows how open and honest they are, and it’s refreshing to see!
The couple received a deluge of backlash over Bell’s post in October celebrating their anniversary.
Bell celebrated her 12th wedding anniversary, sharing a memorable quote from her husband. He once jokingly told her, ‘I would never kill you. Plenty of men have, but even with a strong motive, I wouldn’t,’ and she shared the story with a heart emoji.
People reacted with strong anger to Bell’s joke, calling it offensive and insensitive, especially because it was Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Shepard faced criticism in January for his remarks about Sabrina Carpenter, after publicly admitting he was very enthusiastic about her.
On a recent episode of Dax Shepard’s podcast, Armchair Expert, guest Marcello Hernandez (from Saturday Night Live) said something about a singer that many listeners found awkward.
He told the SNL star that if he were 28 again, he’d do everything he could to date her, and asked if she wasn’t trying to marry her.
Hernandez quickly made it clear he was committed to his girlfriend and wasn’t interested in Shepard’s advances, reminding her that he was already in a relationship.
He told the actor he was dating a Dominican woman who is an architect. He described her as amazing and mentioned she went to Yale.
‘But Sabrina’s awesome,’ he added.
People were shocked and upset by Shepard’s remark about the singer of ‘Please, Please, Please,’ and many called him ‘creepy’ on social media.
