When Mary-Margaret Humes learned her former “Dawson’s Creek” co-star James Van Der Beek had been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer, it brought back difficult memories of her own experience with colon cancer in 2007.
The actress, 71, told Us Weekly on Tuesday that something was on the verge of bursting through the wall.
Things could have taken a really bad turn, but we found the issue early enough to prevent that. My doctor said we were lucky to avoid a serious problem, and that’s thanks to getting screened. While cancer is treatable, it’s important to get regular checkups – and thankfully, that’s something James is doing.
Mary-Margaret has had several encouraging and meaningful talks with the 48-year-old father of six. He feels completely supported by her and is confident he’ll overcome his challenges, with everyone rallying around him.
The cast of Dawson’s Creek will reunite next Monday for the first time since 2018. They’re gathering at the Richard Rodgers Theater in Midtown Manhattan for a class reunion event that will raise money for James and the non-profit organization, F Cancer.

The original cast of ‘Dawson’s Creek’ – including Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams, Joshua Jackson, and more – will reunite for a live reading of the show’s very first episode from 1998.
The popular “Dawson’s Creek” reunion sold out incredibly quickly – in just 12 minutes! – and is meant to highlight how crucial it is to catch health issues early on.
The actress, known for her role in Cowboy Christmas Romance, said James actually called her directly when they reconnected.
He mentioned Michelle was organizing everything as a way for all of us to get back together and honor James’ memory. He’s going through a really tough time, staying positive despite it all, and we – as a TV family – all felt it was important to support him and be there for him.
Mary-Margaret is well-known for playing Gale Leery, the often-discussed mother of the main character in Kevin Williamson’s popular teen drama, *Dawson’s Creek*. She starred alongside John Wesley Shipp in the series, which ran for six seasons on The WB from 1998 to 2003.
Humes was nicknamed ‘den mother’ on set because she would ‘take the kids under my wing.’
It didn’t take much effort to get things going; we all naturally slipped into our roles,” the New York native shared.

The team really bonded like a family and worked well together. While things weren’t always smooth behind the scenes, and some tensions existed, what happened remains private.
Mary-Margaret is joining the cast of Celebrity Weakest Link on Fox next Monday for a special episode featuring TV moms. She’ll be competing with Melinda Clarke, Caroline Rhea, and Jackée Harry.
Before becoming known for her film roles, Susan Humes gained initial recognition as Miss Florida USA in 1975. She first appeared on the big screen in 1981, playing the character Miriam in Mel Brooks’ comedy, *History of the World, Part I*.
