Dawn O'Porter reveals twist of fate which led to her first meeting husband Chris O'Dowd as he admits they almost didn't end up together

As a keen observer of human experiences, I find Dawn O-Porter’s journey to be nothing short of captivating. From her humble beginnings in the United Kingdom to her sojourn in Hollywood, she has navigated the intricacies of life with grace and resilience. Her story serves as a testament to the transformative power of love and the importance of staying true to oneself.

In an interview on Wednesday, Dawn O’Porter shared that a surprising turn of events brought her together with her spouse, Chris O’Dowd.

Back in 2012, the TV host and Irish humorist, who are both 45 years old, tied the knot and have been living happily ever since. However, they confessed that their path to marriage was quite close to not happening.

On their podcast, Table Manners, Jessie and Lennie Ware reminisced about their initial encounter which took place at Dawn’s 30th birthday bash in Los Angeles back in 2009.

In the heart of my experience, as we both resided in Los Angeles but independently, I had spent a year there, and it was during that time when I hosted a celebration.

For my 30th birthday celebration, a friend graciously allowed me to use her Pilates studio – quite an L.A.-style gesture, indeed!

We positioned the Reformers off to the side, and a friend surprised me with a dance floor for the evening. Later on, two other friends, since I’m Scottish by birth, serenaded me with bagpipes.

Dawn went on to say, “Few people attended since I wasn’t aware of many potential guests, and everyone was gone by 9:30. Chris connected with me via Facebook prior to this event, which seemed a bit unusual.

He asked, “Fancy going bowling?” To which I replied, “I don’t think so, but it happens to be my 30th birthday tonight, so why not drop by with all your companions instead?

Chris reminisced: “Originally, I planned to visit, but I didn’t recognize anyone there. So, I reached out to a friend of mine, Nick Frost, a delightful actor, to see if he knew anyone currently residing in that area.

‘And he said, oh, you should look Dawn up. I know Dawn a bit and she’s a good crack.’

Realizing she had turned him down, he casually mentioned: ‘I reached out to her on Facebook, sending a few friend invites… After she declined a couple of times, she found herself short of guests for her birthday, so I was included in the celebration.’

More recently, Dawn confessed about the intense worry she experienced while rearing kids in the United States – a sentiment that surfaced following their decision to depart from Los Angeles after living there for sixteen years.

She admitted the gun culture in America is ‘terrifying’ and that she began to find living their with young children ‘really unsettling’ as she appeared on Lorraine with Ranvir Singh.

She admitted that, for her, the growing anxiety about America had become nearly intolerable.

At the same time, Dawn shared insights into her early years overseas, where her actor spouse Chris gained popularity – a period she confessed left her feeling overwhelmed and smothered under the weight of Hollywood’s intense pressure.

After spending 16 years in the United States, the actor-author duo has made a decision to move back to the UK along with their kids.

Dawn explained that during situations like a pandemic, one tends to carefully consider their current location against their desired place.

‘So the main reason we came home was because we wanted to be closer to family, and that’s it.’

She admitted, “I must acknowledge that America was becoming increasingly unnerving for me.” The gun issue, in particular, is a source of great fear and it’s not just theoretical – it happens even in schools.

‘One of the school mums once said to me “You know if your kid is going on a playdate you have to call and say ‘Have you got a gun in the house'”. And I thought, I don’t want this. I don’t want to make that call and I don’t want someone to ask me that question.’

Dawn added: ‘We were really lucky that we could go home and come back here.’

However, Dawn clarified that she did not harbor negative feelings about America, stating instead that she chose to leave before she grew dislike for it.

That place holds a special spot in my heart since I brought my children into the world there. Looking back on our days in Los Angeles brings a warm feeling, as we spent an incredible 16 years there. However, eventually, it felt right to return home.

Dawn and Chris got married in 2012 following their initial encounter at Dawn’s 30th birthday celebration in 2009. They then exchanged vows in a small, private ceremony.

As a devoted fan, I witnessed an extraordinary escalation in the career of The IT Crowd star when he graced the screen in Bridesmaids. Yet, Dawn, in her own words, confessed that the glamourous red carpet setting initially left her feeling somewhat overwhelmed and pressured at the moment.

She pointed out that individuals who are often in the spotlight are still human beings, and their experiences may differ significantly from what we might assume.

Reflecting on those times, it’s clear they were exceptional, as Chris thrived and we found ourselves walking red carpets – an entirely novel experience for me. Prior to this, I had appeared on television, but nothing compared to the allure of that moment.

She remarked: “At that moment, I would often express, ‘I truly appreciate being here and I’m extremely proud of Chris’, but it seems odd doing so not due to personal accomplishments – an intriguing aspect because at the time, I didn’t realize that my wonderful boyfriend was one of my significant achievements. A realization I now hold.

Looking back now, I realize how youthful and ambitious I was, chasing my success so relentlessly that I failed to appreciate the small victories along the way as significant achievements.
