Dawn French’s brand-new “stupidly hilarious” Somerset-set BBC sitcom is streaming now

You can now watch Dawn French’s new comedy, set in Somerset, on BBC iPlayer. It’s being released before the first episode airs on BBC One tonight.

The show centers around Debbie Fendon (played by French), who comes up with a plan to fraudulently claim life insurance after her husband (Mark Heap from Friday Night Dinner) is incorrectly reported as deceased.

Their son, Harry (played by Craig Roberts from Submarine), finds himself incredibly stressed. He’s struggling with a difficult decision: take a large sum of money that could change his life, or do what he believes is morally right.

But his wife, Neha (Mandip Gill from Doctor Who), is a police officer, and their plan could easily be ruined because of it.

You can now watch all six episodes of the show on BBC iPlayer. If you prefer to watch on TV, it will also be shown on BBC One tonight at 9:30pm, with the title Can You Keep a Secret?

According to The Guardian, the series is packed with silly humor and outrageously funny lines, making it a very funny show overall.

The show’s creator, Simon Mayhew-Archer, is known for his work on This Country. Interestingly, his father, Paul French, co-wrote the popular comedy The Vicar of Dibley.

Simon described the show as a humorous take on the ‘sandwich generation’ – those caring for both young children and elderly parents. He jokingly explained it as dealing with ‘nappies at both ends,’ highlighting the challenges of caring for individuals with incontinence at different stages of life.

French explained she was drawn to the project because it blends comedy with suspense. She commented that successfully combining those two genres is difficult, but the show manages to be both funny and explore the complicated relationships within a quirky family who stumbled into a major crime.

She explained her desire to film the show in the West Country, saying she told Simon right away that she’d do a sitcom, but only if it was filmed near her home. She wanted to bring more work to Cornwall and also be closer to her family and handle practical arrangements more easily.

Simon said yes, but he wasn’t really the one who could make the decision. Ultimately, we ended up filming near Bristol because that’s where all the studios are located.

You can watch “Can You Keep a Secret?” tonight at 9:30pm on BBC One. All episodes are currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
