Davina McCall has shared that she feels like she’s been granted a “new lease on life” following her successful recovery from a potentially fatal brain tumor.
The television host, aged 57, underwent a surgical procedure following the discovery by doctors of a non-cancerous brain growth, an occurrence affecting only about three people out of a million.
The tumor was detected at a private health facility following an offer for a medical examination, which she received after attending a discussion on menopause.
After undergoing a successful surgery to remove the growth, Davina expressed that her continued life feels like a precious ‘gift,’ as she contemplated the success of her newly launched Begin Again podcast.
On Monday, the television personality shared a video on Instagram expressing gratitude to fans for their support of her recent venture. Simultaneously, she reflected upon her personal health journey, admitting that she currently feels like she is starting anew.
She said, “It’s great that you’re here with me on the Begin Again podcast. Recording this show has been a joy, and meeting all of you has been wonderful.
Reflecting on my podcast recording experience, I’ve found it incredibly diverse and versatile, much like my own journey. The title ‘Begin Again’ has taken on a profound meaning for me, echoing my recent battle with a life-threatening tumor. It serves as a reminder that every end is simply a new beginning, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share this perspective with my listeners.
I find myself reborn, albeit in a peculiar manner, owing to my recent success. It seems I’ve been granted another opportunity to live and grow, much like being given a fresh start after a long winter’s slumber. Truly, this renewed sense of life fills me with an indescribable joy, as if I’ve just received the most precious gift one could ever ask for.
As a devoted devotee, I later shared my thoughts on how starting afresh resonates with others, highlighting instances like monumental crises, unemployment, marital dissolution, and unfortunate accidents.
Davina expressed that she will be available to help individuals who may feel stuck or unmotivated in their lives, or those who could benefit from a little encouragement, as she discussed her aspirations and vision for the podcast’s upcoming stages.
Following a brief pause for thought, she summed up by saying: “Christmas used to be tough for me, but not anymore. That means fresh starts are always on the horizon… they always will be.
‘I think I’m gonna be a nightmare next year – I’ve gone very self-reflective!’
Previously, it was mentioned that Davina got her diagnosis unexpectedly when she scheduled a routine check-up or health examination.
In the video, Davina shared that she was given an opportunity for a health scan, which she believed she would excel at, but instead discovered an uncommon, benign brain tumor – one that occurs only about three times out of a million cases.
For a brief period, I chose to avoid facing certain issues head-on by seeking advice from some neurosurgeons. After gathering many different perspectives, I eventually understood that ignoring the problem was not an option.
It’s rather large, measuring about 14 millimeters across, and since it could potentially get larger, which wouldn’t be good, I’ve decided to have it taken out.
She added: ‘Say a prayer for me. I’m in good spirits.’
Davina shared that although she wasn’t facing an imminent threat, her doctors were worried the tumor might expand further and lead to potential problems.
She shared that her emotions had been fluctuating, and she clarified that she would need to stay in the hospital for a minimum of nine days before returning home.
A colloid cyst is generally a slow-developing growth, usually situated close to the brain’s core. This type of growth consists of a jelly-like substance. These non-cancerous masses are frequently discovered unintentionally during diagnostic imaging scans as they often don’t cause any symptoms.
Should symptoms appear due to the growth of the tumor, they’re often characterized by severe morning headaches, feelings of nausea, and a blurring of vision. Additionally, symptoms such as dizziness (vertigo) and double vision may also be experienced.
Many patients typically experience headaches, but other signs such as dizziness (vertigo), memory difficulties, and double vision may also appear.
In case a colloid cyst becomes sufficiently large, it may block the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the brain, potentially causing a significant risk of abrupt and fatal complications.
Davina was unveiled as the Star on The Masked Singer’s Christmas Special episode, a few days after her revelation left viewers in disbelief following her undergoing brain surgery, according to her own account.
In an impressive display of her judging skills honed over six seasons on the popular show, she came in a close second after delighting audiences with two holiday songs, “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” and “This Christmas.
Davina appeared incredibly cheerful upon her comeback to television, following brain surgery to excise a seldom-seen, non-cancerous growth.
On this occasion, the usual panel members, Jonathan Ross (aged 64) and Mo Gilligan (36 years old), were taken aback when they welcomed special guests Jennifer Saunders (age 66) and Dawn French (67) as judges.
Jonathan expressed his surprise by saying, “We never expected you could sing so beautifully. It’s wonderful that you’re alright, but in my eyes, you’ve outshone yourself.
Joel added: ‘I said you had diarrhoea and couldn’t be here’.
Davina replied: ‘I thought you might get me with the DVD one. It has been a ball, thank you!’
