David Tennant’s “unusual” forgotten crime drama described as “superfluous” resurfaces on UK streamer

The American adaptation of the popular British crime series, originally titled “Broadchurch,” is once again available on Amazon Prime Video UK, appearing in the platform’s ‘Popular’ category.

Back in 2014, a captivating police drama I simply can’t get enough of was reimagined by Fox, a spin-off from the immensely popular ITV series. The original stars, David Tennant and Olivia Colman, returned as the dynamic detective duo. Interestingly, this new version was penned by the same talented writer, Chris Chibnall, who brought the original to life.

In a picturesque coastal California town, a shocking discovery unfolds as a young boy’s lifeless body is found on the serene shore. This sets off a significant police inquiry into the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death.

In the original UK series, Tennant portrayed DI Alec Hardy, and he continued to assume the role of Detective Emmett Carver in Gracepoint. On the other hand, Anna Gunn, widely recognized for her work in Breaking Bad, played his on-screen partner, Detective Ellie Miller.

At the time when Gracepoint was released, Tennant himself referred to playing a role in both productions as an “uncommon” or “rare” scenario.

He stated that the two characters seemed distinct to him in numerous ways, and then he noted: “They are actually the same character, but they don’t feel the same. Perhaps it’s clearer for impartial viewers to identify their differences, however, I find them to be very different personally.

Gracepoint also starred Michael Peña (Jack Ryan), Nick Nolte (Poker Face) and Jacki Weaver (Bloom).

As a dedicated viewer, I found the reception towards “Gracepoint” quite diverse. The British accent portrayed by Tennant was undeniably a topic of conversation, while there was also debate over whether a remake like “Broadchurch” was truly necessary.

The Huffington Post review (as cited on Rotten Tomatoes) states, “I don’t oppose adaptations in principle, but this particular adaptation lacks depth and purpose.” On the other hand, Variety considered the concept of an American remake as “somewhat unnecessary.

The Buffalo News described the crime series as both stylish and well-acted, whereas Entertainment Weekly deemed it a skillfully structured whodunit with dry, insightful observations.

According to Forbes, nothing that other mystery dramas from recent years have managed to achieve has been as effectively handled by Gracepoint.

Currently, you can stream Gracepoint over on Amazon Prime Video UK. If you’re looking for the complete Broadchurch series, it’s all available as a box set on ITVX.

The latest print issue from Digital Spy has arrived! You can purchase the “Oasis – Live in ’25” magazine at your local newsstands or online for only £8.99.
