As a huge Doctor Who fan, I was so excited to be at Denver Fan Expo 2026 representing ScreenRant! They were the official media partner this year, and while all the panels were great, the highlight for me was definitely “An Evening with A Legend: David Tennant” on Thursday. He shared what his favorite sci-fi show is – and get this, a reboot of that underrated British series was announced earlier this year! It was amazing to hear him talk about his work, especially Doctor Who, and share some behind-the-scenes stories.
David Tennant, the famous actor, also talked about other science fiction stories that have inspired him. Like all great performers, he’s been influenced by amazing movies and shows. When asked about his favorite sci-fi besides Doctor Who, he shared two stories. He often tells the heartwarming tale of his Aunt Mary taking him to see Star Wars. He also mentioned another favorite, which was…
Besides that, the only other science fiction show I really enjoyed was Blake’s 7. It was created by Terry Nation, who also invented the Daleks and wrote a lot of episodes of Doctor Who. But Blake’s 7 was aimed at a slightly more mature audience. I absolutely loved it – it was fantastic! I believe it ran for four series in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
The captivating show centers on Roj Blake, a man fighting against unfairness, and a crew of less-than-ideal criminals. They journey together on the spaceship Liberator. Blake aims to start a rebellion against the powerful and controlling Terran Federation, and the others find themselves drawn into his fight, despite their reservations.
I’ve been a fan of Blake’s 7 for years, and it’s so exciting to see it potentially reaching a wider audience! It’s always been a really special show, even if it hasn’t had massive mainstream success. For ages, people have been trying to figure out what to do with the rights – everything from a new TV movie to even a cartoon! But now, it feels like things are really happening. The team behind The Last of Us and even some Doctor Who episodes – Multitude Productions – are rebooting it, and I think they’re going to do an amazing job bringing this fantastic story to a whole new generation. It deserves to be seen by everyone!
The Blake’s 7 Reboot Could Bring The Classic Story To A Whole New Audience
The BBC’s space opera was a strikingly dark and unsettling show that, despite being well-made, seemed to arrive at an odd moment. It boldly disregarded traditional space opera conventions, embracing a cynical and pessimistic atmosphere – a common trait in modern science fiction. The characters aren’t heroes; they’re flawed individuals driven by self-interest, and the storylines are often shockingly grim. The crew of the Liberator are a charmingly dysfunctional group – selfish and sometimes petty, but ultimately likable. Each member has their own reasons for battling the Federation, and Blake is the closest thing to a purely noble figure. They’re a diverse and unusual team, each bringing a unique skillset to the fight.
If Blake’s 7 had been released recently, it would likely have become as popular as The Expanse. While the show’s visuals aren’t great, it has the themes, character types, and overall feel that have been popular in science fiction since around the time of Battlestar Galactica. Unfortunately, Blake’s 7 is now quite obscure – even David Tennant wasn’t sure audiences would recognize it, though he suspected a few might. He pointed out that it was similar to early Doctor Who, being another BBC science fiction show made on a comparable budget around the same time, and that didn’t hinder its quality.
David Tennant had a good point wondering if people would remember and enjoy Blake’s 7. It’s a fantastic sci-fi series, but many fans outside the UK haven’t even heard of it. Thankfully, the reboot is bringing renewed attention to the original show, offering a chance for classic sci-fi fans to rediscover it. The new series will also introduce the story to a whole new generation. It will be fascinating to see what longtime fans, like Tennant, think of the reboot. If it’s done well, this new version of Blake’s 7 could be a huge success.
