David Tennant’s ’80s-set drama confirms release date
As a long-time fan of British television and literature, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming release of “Rivals” on Disney Plus! With its star-studded cast, led by none other than David Tennant, this adaptation of Dame Jilly Cooper’s best-selling novel promises to be a delightful treat for viewers.
The much-awaited series, titled “Rivals,” featuring David Tennant, has officially set its premiere date. All eight episodes will debut on October 18, a Friday, only on the streaming platform, Disney Plus.
In the 1980s, a retelling of Dame Jilly Cooper’s popular book Rivals is placed amidst the cutthroat society of England’s high society – specifically, the competitive realm of television production during that era.
In this production, Tennant assumes the character of Lord Tony Baddingham. The cast list also features Alex Hassell, portraying Rupert Campbell-Black – a former Olympian, television station manager at Corinium Television, and Member of Parliament. Additionally, Aidan Turner is playing Declan O’Hara, a TV presenter known for his moustache.
Additionally, Nafessa Williams from “Black Lightning,” Katherine Parkinson known for “Humans” and “Doc Martin,” Bella Maclean hailing from “Sex Education,” Emily Atack famous for “The Inbetweeners,” Danny Dyer of “EastEnders,” Lisa McGrillis recognized in ITV’s “Maternal,” and Luke Pasqualino starring on BBC One’s “Our Girl” are also part of the ensemble cast.
Earlier, we got our first glimpses of certain cast members portraying their characters, such as Aidan Turner from ‘Poldark’, who underwent a change, and David Tennant from ‘Doctor Who’, who seemed to be dressed in a rural-inspired outfit.
Photos taken during the show also provided us with an initial look at Danny Dyer, appearing noticeably different from his usual image, along with Emily Atack, who received a stylish 1980s transformation.
Earlier, she expressed being completely captivated upon hearing the cast announcements for the TV series based on her Rutshire Chronicles book.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “With an incredible lineup of acting talents from the British Isles, I could only wish for a more perfect group of characters to bring my gaming world to life.”
The executive producers of this show are Dominic Treadwell-Collins, known for “A Very English Scandal” and “EastEnders”, Alexander Lamb from “Ackley Bridge” and “The Bay”, Felicity Blunt, Laura Wade who won an Olivier Award for her plays, and the esteemed Dame Jilly Cooper.
BAFTA-nominated Elliot Hegarty (Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso and Trying) acts as the lead director.
Rivals is coming to Disney+ on October 18.
