David Tennant was warned against Doctor Who return: “It’s not going to work”
David Tennant has revealed that he was advised to turn down the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who.
Known for embodying the Tenth Doctor in the cherished science fiction show between 2005 and 2010, he later made a brief comeback to portray the Fourteenth Doctor during the series’ 60th anniversary special episodes in 2023.
Though playing this role is well-known as one of Tennant’s greatest accomplishments, he recently disclosed that he almost declined the offer. His agent at the time had suggested to stay away from it.

He revealed, during the latest installment of his podcast David Tennant Does a Podcast With, that at one point he had seriously considered not participating in Doctor Who.
48 hours after they inquired about it, I found myself grappling with its implications. At the time, I had an agent who advised me to steer clear of it, asserting it wouldn’t pan out. However, looking back, my former agent – a brilliant woman now retired from the industry – didn’t quite hit the mark with that prediction.
After taking on the role, the actor explained how his life transformed: “All of a sudden, it’s up to you to create your own guidelines, and there aren’t many mentors around to guide you. It can be quite difficult navigating this new terrain on your own.
Early in life, it was frequent for my parents to be approached at the door, which I struggled with as I felt responsible for their protection, but they seemed uninterested in such protection themselves.
In the upcoming ITV drama titled “The Hack“, Tenant will take on the role of Nick Davies, a genuine investigative journalist, who exposed the phone-hacking scandal that occurred at Rupert Murdoch’s newspaper, News of the World.
In a recent episode of the “Off Menu” podcast, Tennant candidly discussed the making of the series and described it as a particularly demanding experience.
He went on to explain, “The details I’m dealing with are rather intricate due to my character being a journalist who uncovered a complex case, involving a great deal of specialized knowledge.
As a gamer, I’ve got to tread carefully here since there are legal eagles keeping an eye out to ensure we avoid any slip-ups in our conversation.
In the UK, the TV series “Doctor Who” is broadcast on BBC One, while it can be found on Disney+ everywhere else. For those in the UK, classic episodes of “Doctor Who” are accessible via BBC iPlayer.
