joined a group of famous actors in the popular Hulu/Disney+ series , which was a big success last year. The show will be back with more exciting 1980s-themed adventures in early 2026. Even though new episodes aren’t expected for several months, Tennant has hinted that his character will be involved in even more “terrible things” in the upcoming second season.
Rivals is a television series adapted from the novel of the same name by British author Jilly Cooper. It’s a boldly sensual story about ambition, desire, and the reserved nature of the British upper class. The show is set in the 1980s, in the charming rural area of Rutshire, England, and focuses on the intense rivalry between media tycoon Tony Baddingham (played by Tennant) and his competitor, Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell). Their power struggle unfolds with plenty of comedic and scandalous situations.
During an appearance at FanX Salt Lake City Comic Convention (as reported by Collider), Tennant remained mostly secretive about the second season of Rivals. However, he hinted that his character will be even more villainous in the upcoming season. He stated:
Everything I can share about Season 2 of Rivals is that I end up doing some really awful things. Awful things! They’re much worse than what happened last season!
‘Rivals’ Is Adding to Its Cast for Saucy Seconds

Hulu/Disney+
It wasn’t originally part of Disney+’s vision – especially for those who thought of Disney as only making cheerful, family-friendly animated films – to create a steamy adaptation of a Jilly Cooper novel. But things evolve, and now, while the series streams on Hulu in the U.S., viewers in many other countries can easily switch between the scandalous events at Rutshire and the newest kid-oriented animation from Disney.
In addition to stars like Tennant, Danny Dyer, Aiden Turner, and Nafessa Williams, Season 2 of Rivals will be longer than the first, increasing from eight to 12 episodes, and will also feature more actors. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Hayley Atwell, well-known from the MCU, will be joining the cast as Helen Gordon, ex-wife of Campbell-Black. Rupert Everett will play Helen’s husband, Malise. They are joined by a number of new guest stars, including Maxim Ays, Holly Cattle, Oliver Dench, Amanda Lawrence, Bobby Lockwood, Eliot Salt and Jonny Weldon.
I have to say, Rivals really took me by surprise in 2024. What struck me most was that, unlike so many adaptations these days, it didn’t feel the need to update the story’s setting. It fully leaned into the 80s vibe of the original book, and it *worked*. Season 1 was a critical and audience darling, scoring an impressive 95% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, and a solid 90% on the Popcornmeter. And based on what David Tennant‘s been saying, Season 2 looks like it’s going to deliver more of that same nostalgic energy. It’s interesting because, looking at recent successes like The Hunting Wives, it seems like viewers are really craving those juicy, over-the-top stories right now – and Rivals clearly delivers.
