David Tennant reveals surprising inspiration behind iconic Doctor Who costume

David Tennant has spoken about the surprising inspiration behind iconic Doctor Who costume.

Throughout his term from 2006 to 2010 (and again in 2023), the Doctor portrayed by Tennant was most recognized for wearing a pinstripe suit along with Converse All-Stars. On occasion, he added a duster coat as an extra touch.

On the most recent episode of the Off Menu podcast, hosts Ed Gamble and James Acaster shared with Tennant an anecdote about their friend, comedy writer Tom Neenan. Apparently, years ago at a train station, Tom encountered Tennant while he was dressed in a safari-like suit. Tennant admired the outfit, and it so happens that when Tennant later appeared as The Doctor, he wore a suit reminiscent of the one Tennant had complimented.

Instead of subtly suggesting that he might have “unconsciously” been affected by that gathering, it would be more accurate to say that he unknowingly copied the appearance from another person in the meeting.

He clarified, “The inspiration for my suit comes from Jamie Oliver. I saw him on the Parkinson show, wearing a suit and trainers in a way that looked really trendy. Now, it’s not like I’m replicating his exact suit, but he sparked the idea.

Besides the final decision, there were numerous attempts made regarding the Tenth Doctor’s appearance, as Tennant mentioned multiple discussions and back-and-forth exchanges in meetings.

Prior to deciding on the Oliver outfit, Tennant and the Who group visited a costume shop and tried on various options.

The actor expressed great satisfaction with the Doctor’s wardrobe and commended Ncuti Gatwa’s appearance in the different costumes he dons throughout each episode (with a fresh outfit almost every episode, a choice that Tennant described as “daring”).

The beloved series, “Doctor Who,” will make its comeback on April 12 over BBC One in the United Kingdom. For viewers outside the UK, catch it on Disney+. If you’d like to revisit some classic episodes, head over to BBC iPlayer in the UK.
