David Tennant and Cush Jumbo’s Macbeth play is cancelled for the THIRD night running just two hours before curtain call due to ‘company illness’ as fans share their fury
As someone who has been following theatre for quite some time now, I must say that the cancellation of the Macbeth play at the Harold Pinter Theatre comes as a bit of a disappointment. However, it is understandable that unforeseen circumstances can arise and necessitate such decisions.
The three-night run of David Tennant and Cush Jumbo’s performance of Macbeth has been terminated, with the final performance being abruptly cancelled only two hours prior to its scheduled start time.
The Shakespearean play, which is being shown at the Harold Pinter theatre in London’s West End, was forced to close its doors due to ‘company illness’.
As a devoted admirer, I’ve felt the wrath shared by fellow fans when the sudden cancellation was announced at the last minute. Many of us had gone great distances, ready to witness the play.
Attendees expressed their hope for a quick recovery of the cast members, mentioning that they would have preferred knowing about it earlier in the day to avoid unnecessary expenses on travel and meals.
As a die-hard fan, I was absolutely crushed when the Harold Pinter X account broke the news on November 1st that the much-anticipated evening performance was getting canceled.
Over the next three days, the performances were called off too, with the social media platform expressing apologies and gratitude to those who held tickets.
It’s regretful that our production of Macbeth for tonight is cancelled because the company is under the weather.
‘In the coming days, you’ll hear from your ticketing service about your tickets. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience.’
Reporting that fans were most recently alerted just two hours before, one person said: ‘Meanwhile, in London, UK, the entire company (including David Tennant of Macbeth is ill & forced cancellation of 4 consecutive performances just to hours prior to their curtain call.’
Others expressed their disappointment below an Instagram post, commenting: “I support the actors looking after themselves, but canceling with just 1.5 hours notice seems a bit inconsiderate”; “We traveled from Lyon for tonight’s show. It would have been nice if they had announced the cancellation earlier in the day…
We thoroughly verified everything before purchasing train tickets and dinner, ensuring all was in order. Now that we’ve been overcharged, who will reimburse us! It’s astonishing how little concern was shown towards the customers. The supposedly excellent staff were left standing outside as usual, having a tough time. Who on earth made the decision not to cancel this morning, allowing things to continue unnecessarily?
The significant negative public relations impact from your late cancellation is much greater than if the cancellation had occurred earlier.
Another said: ‘I’m really disappointed by the way this has been handled. My friend and I had tickets for tonight. Because we knew previous shows had been cancelled we’d been checking all morning for notice of cancellation.
As a dedicated follower, I had planned to travel to London this afternoon, having already purchased train tickets and arranged for a meal near the theater. The cancellation announced at 5:45 pm was far too late, showing a lack of respect and consideration towards ticket holders who have invested time and money in their journey.
“It would’ve been ideal to make a decision earlier in the day. I want to clarify that I’m not casting blame on the cast, as illness is unavoidable and I wish everyone a speedy recovery. However, I find the theatre’s handling of this situation disrespectful and rude.
People expressed frustration about the cancellation on X, saying: ‘We had reserved non-refundable train tickets weeks ago for our performance tomorrow – is there any possibility of reimbursing the ticket cost?’
Why did the ticket agents resort to justifying higher future ticket prices for the upcoming shows with this reason?
Another fumed: ‘Maybe if you answered just one of the many people who asked about tonight’s performance on here and Instagram your phone lines wouldn’t be clogged up with callers trying to find out. Been on hold for 50 minutes now.’
‘Have I understood correctly that the play for tomorrow has been cancelled? To avoid any confusion, could you please verify this information, as I don’t want to leave early tomorrow to travel to London.’
Option A: ‘Could you provide additional details, please? Specifically, I’m interested in rescheduling, refunds, and when the service will be available again. It’s frustrating when cancellations occur via text message without further explanation or follow-up information.’
TopMob have contacted Harold Pinter theatre for comment.
This year, David and Cush performed a rendition of William Shakespeare’s play at the Donmar Warehouse in Covent Garden, then later transferred their production to Harold Pinter.
Max Webster, who’s famously worked on productions like Life of Pi and Henry V, is the one guiding this adaptation as its director, being associated with the Donmar Warehouse.
Previously, Cush graced the stage at the Young Vic in Hamlet several years ago. At that time, she was noted by the previous New York Times theater critic Ben Brantley as emanating an unmistakable energy, ambition, and raw talent often referred to as star power, which is difficult to quantify.
In a somber and theatrical animated setting, David and Cush left spectators awestruck with an extraordinary act – the captivating performance carries on, planned for the upcoming winter season.
Last year, when speaking with The Guardian about my role in Macbeth, I said, “I believed I had a good grasp of this play and found it to be simpler than any other Shakespearean play I’ve ever rehearsed.
Every new scene takes an unexpected turn, and the narrative propels forward with remarkable vigor, making it unlike any Shakespearean play I’ve performed in terms of pacing.
Cush remarked: ‘She’s thoroughly embedded in our society. Many believe they recognize her. Most of us encountered the play during our school days. I, for one, disliked it immensely. It was tedious, but that’s because Shakespearean plays are not intended to be read; they’re intended to be performed.
A common perception of Lady Macbeth is that she’s a stereotype – a powerful, manipulative woman who drove her husband to commit terrible deeds. However, what many fail to recognize is that she, too, was a person with feelings, fears, and complexities, not just a typecast character.
