David Mitchell reflects on unbelievable fan response to new show with Anna Maxwell Martin
David Mitchell, the star of the latest series “Ludwig,” where he acts alongside Anna Maxwell Martin, has shared thoughts on the audience’s reaction to this new production.
This detective show centers around the enigmatic puzzle creator, John Taylor (portrayed by Mitchell), and his sister-in-law, Lucy (also Martin), who team up to unravel the mystery behind the vanishing of James, John’s identical twin sibling, also acted by Mitchell.
After an extremely well-received initial run, the show was given a green light for a second season by the BBC in October. Notably, Mitchell, known for his role in Peep Show, expressed to Radio Times that he was delighted by the positive feedback he received.
He stated, “It’s rare for results to be this promising, but nothing I’ve ever done has captured an audience so swiftly.” Despite my past accomplishments that I’m extremely proud of, it seemed as though my work was aired in the 1980s on TV: by the end of the week, everyone was talking about it.
I can’t explain [why the program was so successful]. Frankly, I wouldn’t claim credit myself. But I have to say, it was exceptionally well-written and there seemed to be a strong demand for that particular type of show. I believe the BBC did an excellent job promoting it and aired it at a time when viewers were particularly interested in tuning in.
I’m hoping it turned out to be a great rendition of that type of program, as it seemed fitting for the audience at the time. It’s clear that this fanbase differs from that of Peep Show, but there was an authentic excitement among them, indicating they truly enjoyed the show – which is the essence of producing television.
As Mitchell, a former team captain on “Would I Lie to You?”, let me tell you about the charm that pulled me into this captivating show. It all started when I was just a kid, engrossed in the mysteries of Miss Marple, starring the enchanting Joan Hickson. That’s my personal connection!
I find murder mysteries intriguing, especially if they can be presented in a humorous light. I prefer mysteries over gruesome or grim depictions that bring up the fragility of humanity.
Ludwig airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
