David Lynch’s Haunting Final Words Before Tragic Death: ‘May Everyone Be Free of Disease’
On the day before his death, which was just four days before his 79th birthday, David Lynch delivered an emotional and chilling speech during his last public engagement, a moment that turned out to be his farewell address.
In 2020, the renowned, quirky movie director found himself confined at home due to emphysema diagnosis, requiring extra oxygen support, and thus had to direct his films remotely.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the effortless coolness of David during his farewell address, sporting his iconic thick white mane and shades. Streamed live to his TM foundation’s Meditate America gala held at Manhattan’s Lincoln Center on September 12, his words resonated with a captivating charm that only he possesses.
Evening everyone, I trust you’re all having a marvelous evening. I have some casual thoughts to share with you, on the topic of ‘nothing.’
Furthermore, this ‘nothing’ refers to the ultimate reality, the all-encompassing entity, devoid of any physical or tangible attributes. It can be equated to the unified force or field. In simpler terms, it’s not a hyphenated object or thing; rather, it symbolizes pure awareness.
The individual who received an honorary Oscar back in 1973, and subsequently took up mediation, then spoke about the Beatles’ journey to Rishikesh, India in 1968. During this time, they were immersed in learning at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s ashram.
David clarified that Maharishi was discussing the inner realm as being formless, not yet manifested, with no specific object or concept attached to it.
Additionally, John Lennon appears to be grasping the concept and asks Maharishi, “Are you suggesting that nothing will alter my perspective of the world, Maharishi?” At this point, they shared a laugh.
Lynch noted that this concept motivated the British rock star to incorporate that phrase not only in his song “Across the Universe” from the Beatles’ 1969 hit album, but also in his recurring phrase ‘Jai guru deva om’ (‘All glory to Guru Dev’) within it. This track later found its place on their 1970 release titled Let It Be.
The Palme d’Or winner commented: ‘I suspect people found it a bit melancholic. Yet, the song had uplifting aspects, discussing meditation and its charm. However, repeated lines like “Nothing can alter my world” left them puzzled about its meaning.’
However, John Lennon understood this clearly; it wasn’t about saying “No, nothing’s going to alter my world.” Instead, it was more like a resounding “Yes! Nothing’s going to change my world significantly!
At that moment, David chose to spin a lesser-known band from Georgia’s rendition of “Across the Universe” on his turntable.
‘May everyone be happy,’ Lynch said in darkness after the song ended.
In my wellness-focused perspective, I wish for all beings to enjoy robust health and vitality. May blessings abound in every corner of life. Let no one bear the burden of pain or hardship. Here’s to peace, harmony, and prosperity for all. – A Lifestyle Expert’s Blessing (Inspired by Jai Gurudev)
The closing passage from the 2007 book “Catching The Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity” by the artist known as Cellophane Memories is identical to this one.
David’s family shared the news of his passing through a Facebook post, expressing: ‘A vast emptiness has appeared where he used to be. Yet, just as he often said, “Focus on the delicious donut, not the hole.” Today is a splendid day filled with radiant sunlight and clear blue skies.’
In the final stages of his life, Lynch – a long-time resident of Los Angeles since 1970, cherishing every moment there – found himself obligated to leave behind his treasured Mulholland Drive estate on account of the encroaching wildfires.
Approximately two months back, the joint creator of Twin Peaks expressed a sense of responsibility towards his followers by encouraging them to abandon habits that could potentially be lethal for them, similar to his own struggle with smoking, a habit he adopted as early as eight years old.
On November 14, David shared that he maintains an optimistic outlook, centering on his body’s natural healing abilities. Living with emphysema is challenging, as it makes simple tasks such as crossing a room quite difficult for him, similar to moving around while wearing a plastic bag over one’s head.
Tributes flooded in for the genuine American artist, Lynch, from notables such as Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Steven Soderbergh, Questlove, James Gunn, Kyle MacLachlan, and Billy Corgan.
