David Hasselhoff TV show from the 1980s is getting a reboot

The team responsible for rejuvenating the Karate Kid series, which became a popular Netflix show known as Cobra Kai, are now aiming to breathe new life into another 1980s brand that has been inactive: Knight Rider.

According to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg are in discussions for developing a contemporary version of the show.

According to sources, the three are discussing preliminary ideas for writing the screenplay. If the project progresses, Schlossberg is likely to direct it.

In the ’80s television show, David Hasselhoff, Edward Mulhare, Patricia McPherson, Rebecca Holden, narrator Richard Basehart, and a car named KITT with the ability to talk were part of the main cast.

The original series created by Glen A. Larson was aired on NBC’s prime-time schedule between 1982 and 1986, spanning across four seasons with a total of 90 episodes broadcast.

According to a logline, the series followed ‘the adventures of lone crime-fighter, Michael Knight.’

In my journey, I had the honor of embodying a knight on screen, a transformative role that ultimately catapulted me to fame and led to my successful run on the iconic 90s series, Baywatch – all thanks to being cast in that part by Hasselhoff.

In the series, the main character was aided by his nearly unstoppable and highly intelligent car named KITT as they fought against wicked forces, according to the show’s summary.

As per Entertainment Weekly’s report, writers Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider initially composed a draft for the remake.

The outlet noted that ‘plot details are being kept under wraps’ in the early stages of the project.

Over the years, this widely recognized franchise, which was a mainstay of the extravagant ’80s, has undergone multiple reinventions in an attempt to breathe new life into it.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but gush about how this captivating universe spawned a trilogy of sorts in the ’90s. The movies “Knight Rider 2000” (1991) and “Knight Rider 2010” (1994), along with the TV show “Team Knight Rider” (1997), were all born from its magic! Each one of these adaptations brought a unique twist to the original, keeping us fans on the edge of our seats.

The news source indicated that there was some uncertainty about whether Hasselhoff would participate in the remake at all.

The interview from 2012 revealed that the actor/singer expressed no desire to update the project, unless it returned to its original, nostalgic essence.

Back in November of 2012, I shared with Entertainment Weekly that if you’re not making something reminiscent of the classic style, it simply won’t feel like a true successor to Knight Rider.

Previously, the trio comprising of Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg worked together on the series Cobra Kai, which is an adaptation from Robert Mark Kamen’s movie The Karate Kid.

The show that revitalized the acting careers of Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, spanning six seasons, received a total of 11 Primetime Emmy award nominations – among which was the category of Outstanding Comedy Series at the 73rd annual Emmys in 2021.

Heald, Hurwitz, and Schlossberg are all geared up for creating an adaptation through their firm, Counterbalance Entertainment.

In this project, they will be collaborating with Kelly McCormick and David Leitch from 87North, as well as Gary Barber and Chris Stone from Spyglass, who are all serving as producers for the adaptation of the television series.
