Lily’s latest album explores the pain of her divorce, sparked by her ex-husband’s infidelity. A central theme revolves around a woman named Madeline, whom Lily repeatedly questions in a song with a pointed lyric: ‘Who the f is Madeline?’ The album appears to be based on Lily’s personal experiences.
The popular Madeline stories, about a little orphan who attends boarding school, were adapted into a movie in 1998. Hatty Jones starred as Madeline in the film.

She topped her school uniform off with a straw hat, Mary Jane shoes and added a bright orange wig.
The 1998 movie version of Madeline featured Frances McDormand as Miss Clavel, the nun, and Nigel Hawthorne as Lord Covington.
The story takes place in Paris, 1956, and centers on Madeline and twelve other students at a Catholic boarding school who are determined to save it from closing.
Lily’s new song, “Madeline,” came out last Friday. It’s featured on her album, West End Girl.
The singer responded to David’s cheating by writing lyrics expressing her distrust, stating she doesn’t believe a word he says.
In the song “Tennis,” Lily sings about discovering a text message from an unknown woman on her partner’s phone and questioning him about who she is.
This news follows a difficult period for Lily, who separated from her husband, David, in December. She had previously claimed he was unfaithful, including a three-year relationship with a younger costume designer.
