David Harbour confirms that he's returning as Santa in a Violent Night sequel

As a seasoned gamer with a knack for action movies, especially those that blend Christmas cheer with adrenaline-pumping sequences, I couldn’t be more thrilled about David Harbour reprising his role as the Viking Santa Claus in “Violent Night 2”. The first installment was a refreshing take on the Santa mythos, and I eagerly await to see how they’ll up the ante in the sequel.

Hurray! David Harbour will indeed grow the famous beard and put on the classic Santa Claus costume once more for Violent Night 2. The sequel had already been confirmed to be underway, but this holiday season, Harbour shared a fresh Instagram post revealing he’s holding the script for the upcoming movie.

In a warm and inviting setup, the actor is pictured seated alongside another Santa Claus figure. A closer look at what the actor, Harbour, is carrying reveals the cover page of the script for “Violent Night 2”.

In 2022, the initial film debuted with strong performance as an action-packed mid-budget Christmas movie starring Santa Claus taking down a group of nefarious characters. Grossing over $75 million worldwide and receiving generally positive reviews from critics, this unique take on the holiday classic stood out. Unlike traditional portrayals of Santa Claus, Harbour’s character is revealed to be descended from a line of ancient Viking warriors, giving him the necessary skills to fend off a group of mercenaries who disrupt a family’s Christmas celebration and hold them hostage.

In January 2023, Tommy Wirkola, the director, shared with The Wrap their intentions for a sequel. At that point, he mentioned they weren’t quite ready to start filming, but were actively preparing and aiming to reunite Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the writers of the original movie.

The main challenge in launching the “Violent Night” movie has been coordinating everyone’s availability, especially Sidney Harbour, who has found himself particularly swamped due to the final seasons of “Stranger Things” and his commitment to Marvel’s upcoming film, “Thunderbolts.

For the upcoming sequel, no specific storyline details have been disclosed as of now. Given that Santa promptly dealt with the mercenaries in the original film, it seems improbable that any characters from the first movie will reappear.

In 2022, prior to the release of “Violent Night” in cinemas, Harbour proposed a concept for the sequel that included Charlize Theron as Mrs. Claus. It’s possible this idea might become reality. Remember, even in the original film, Santa did receive a note from his wife!

If you’re interested in watching “Violent Night” again, you can stream it on Starz, or you can rent or buy it from various digital retailers.
