David Dastmalchian Reveals Why Small Budget Movies Let Creativity Explode

This accomplished character actor has shone in numerous films directed by Denis Villeneuve, including “Prisoners” and the upcoming “Dune.” He held leading roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Ant-Man” series, and delivered a memorable performance in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe tale, “The Suicide Squad.” Now, he’s taking center stage in a brand new horror movie, following the success of “Late Night with the Devil” (2023). Directed by Felipe Vargas, this actor is currently gracing screens everywhere, and MovieWeb had the opportunity to chat with Dastmalchian at a Los Angeles coffee shop event where he was promoting his latest project, “Rosario,” by serving themed drinks inspired by the demon-themed film.

Discussing his experience, Dastmalchian shared insights on the differences between working on high-profile franchises like Marvel and DCU as well as independent films such as “Late Night with the Devil” and “Rosario”. He also expressed his preference for one type of production over the other.

As a film enthusiast, I thrive on collaborating with directors who value their artistic colleagues. I yearn for an environment where our creative minds can flourish and our passion for storytelling can be unleashed without restraints. Whether it’s a small-scale production like “Late Night with the Devil” or a larger project such as James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad”, I find myself drawn to directors who embody a strong vision, cherish their artists, and nurture our shared love for cinema. Ideally, they would have the resources and support necessary to bring these visions to life in a way that resonates with audiences everywhere.

Dastmalchian went on to say, “Limited budgets can actually inspire filmmakers to create truly outstanding work. For instance, the artistic team behind ‘Rosario’ managed to make Bogota, Colombia, look like Manhattan in their production design – this wasn’t filmed in New York City at all. It’s astounding to see what they achieved in such an amazing city and country with a vibrant film community. They created something that rivals the quality of films shot in the U.S., which is truly impressive.

Dastmalchian Describes Entering “Horror Zen”

After the recent launch of “Rosario”, it can be confidently stated that the consistently excellent actor Dastmalchian has been delivering chilling performances in horror films, a trend that continues. In an exclusive interview with us, he shared insights into the film’s progress and his future expectations for the horror genre:

Being involved with “Late Night with the Devil” played a significant role in my journey towards a unique, eerie state I find myself in. It’s been an incredible privilege to be part of a film like “Rosario“, and to have become such an essential element in the narrative creation process with numerous horror genre filmmakers I admire. This has always been a dream of mine, and I feel incredibly fortunate that it’s coming true. I’m working alongside seasoned professionals who excel at crafting stories like these, as well as fresh, innovative voices such as Felipe [Vargas], whose new perspective is crucial for the genre at this time. We need more diversity in horror, more storytellers, and especially young voices who aren’t typical of the traditional Hollywood mold.
