Approaching the imminent premiere of Superman, actor David Corenswet recently offered insights into Clark Kent’s driving forces and what makes this iconic figure stand out, notably referencing his distinctive outfit selection. A contentious discussion about Superman has centered around whether or not the character should continue wearing his traditional suit with shorts on top.
On the DC Studios Showcase podcast, Corenswet shared his thoughts about what makes Superman an interesting character. Specifically, he discussed why he finds Superman appealing as a hero.
In preparing for my audition tape, I held a firm belief about Superman: people often find him boring due to his immense power and lack of emotional turmoil. However, I later found out that Grant Morrison had already recognized this aspect and it served as the foundation for All-Star Superman comic series. The very traits that seem to diminish Superman’s appeal – his all-powerful nature, lack of personal strife, and ideal upbringing – are what make him an intriguing character. Contrary to popular belief, these aspects are not weaknesses; they form the core of his fascinating personality.
According to Grant Morrison, some might question, “But where’s the excitement? Where are the high stakes?” However, he argues that the most captivating conflicts revolve around relationships, emotions, feelings of solitude and disconnection from those he yearns to be with the closest, all while maintaining his goodness and enjoying his work. He never views his tasks as burdens but instead cherishes them.
From my perspective as a movie enthusiast, the question about Clark’s decision to wear the iconic trunks is straightforward: he aims for an unintimidating look. As Corenswet put it, “The issue with the trunks is that they seem a bit ridiculous. You can debate it, you can try to make them less absurd.” He elaborated that director James Gunn had a tough time justifying their practicality.
Corensweit initiated the conversation by asking an intriguing question, “Is it possible that the intention is for them to appear somewhat goofy?” He subsequently elaborated: “Superman chooses to appear a bit silly because he doesn’t strive to be stylish. He doesn’t desire to be cool. Instead, he wants to embody Clark Kent – a man struggling to fit in at work and merely passing as ordinary.
What David Corenswet’s Superman Comments Mean

Earlier on, Gunn had shared his challenges in designing the trunks for DCU’s Superman. He even consulted Zack Snyder, director of Man of Steel. However, it was Corenswet who eventually convinced him to stick with Superman sporting the trunks and a vibrant outfit.
As a film enthusiast, I delved deeper into the reasoning behind Superman’s deliberate choice to appear less than formidable. I explained it this way:
“You’ve witnessed me catching collapsing buildings, disintegrating whatever with my laser eyes, and battling incredible super-powered adversaries. But… I don’t want you to believe that you couldn’t approach me for directions. Or ask for help in a difficult situation. Or for a child to, as it were, seek help with their homework.
This Superman “is eager to accomplish everything.” For Corenswet, “the trunks symbolize a message of humility: ‘I’m not overly aloof… I don’t take myself too seriously. Even though I may be very powerful, feel free to approach me, laugh at me if you’d like. Who cares? I can handle it.’
Our Take On David Corenswet’s Superman Comments

Regardless of whether you admire or criticize Superman’s distinctive costume, it’s undeniably iconic. Director Gunn aimed to give these costumes a functional role in his movie, and Corenswet’s explanation does just that – although with a character-centric perspective. Given the generally upbeat mood of Superman, it fits well for this version of the hero to seem secure and amiable above all else.
